Polls open in Congo election

(AP) ? Polls opened in Congo's capital as the government of this nation pummeled by war vowed to go ahead with its much-anticipated election despite massive logistical challenges.

As day broke on Monday, a trickle gathered outside polling stations as residents waited to take part in a presidential and legislative election that could further consolidate the country's peace, or else drag it back into conflict.

Opposition candidates had called for the poll to be delayed because of the late delivery of voting materials. As they opened Monday, several polling stations were unable to allow voting because they were still without ink.

Biden's 2012 targets: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A year from Election Day, Democrats are crafting a campaign strategy for Vice President Joe Biden that targets the big three political battlegrounds: Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, states where Biden might be more of an asset to President Barack Obama's re-election campaign than the president himself.

The Biden plan underscores an uncomfortable reality for the Obama team. A shaky economy and sagging enthusiasm among Democrats could shrink the electoral map for Obama in 2012, forcing his campaign to depend on carrying the 67 electoral votes up for grabs in the three swing states.

Obama won all three states in 2008. But this time he faces challenges in each, particularly in Ohio and Florida, where voters elected Republican governors in the 2010 midterm elections.

The president sometimes struggles to connect with Ohio and Pennsylvania's white working-class voters, and Jewish voters who make up a core constituency for Florida Democrats and view him with skepticism.

Biden has built deep ties to both groups during his four decades in national politics, connections that could make a difference.

As a long-serving member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Biden cemented his reputation as an unyielding supporter of Israel, winning the respect of many in the Jewish community. And Biden's upbringing in a working class, Catholic family from Scranton, Pa., gives him a valuable political intangible: He empathizes with the struggles of blue-collar Americans because his family lived those struggles.

"Talking to blue-collar voters is perhaps his greatest attribute," said Dan Schnur, a Republican political analyst. "Obama provides the speeches, and Biden provides the blue-collar subtitles."

While Biden's campaign travel won't kick into high gear until next year, he's already been making stops in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida this fall, speaking at events focused on education, public safety and small businesses and raising campaign cash. Behind the scenes, he's working the phones with prominent Jewish groups and Catholic organizations in those states, a Democratic official said.

Biden is also targeting organized labor, speaking frequently with union leaders in Ohio ahead of last week's vote on a state law that would have curbed collective bargaining rights for public workers. Voters struck down the measure, and Biden traveled to Cleveland Tuesday to celebrate the victory with union members.

The Democratic official said the vice president will also be a frequent visitor to Iowa and New Hampshire in the coming weeks, seeking to steal some of the spotlight from the Republican presidential candidates blanketing those states ahead of the January caucus and primary.

And while Obama may have declared that he won't be commenting on the Republican presidential field until there's a nominee, Biden is following no such rules. He's calling out GOP candidates by name, and in true Biden style, he appears to be relishing in doing so.

During a speech last month to the Florida Democratic Convention, Biden singled out "Romney and Rick", criticizing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for saying the government should let the foreclosure crisis hit rock bottom, and hammering Texas Gov. Rick Perry's assertion that he would send U.S. troops into Mexico.

And he took on the full GOP field during an October fundraiser in New Hampshire, saying "There is no fundamental difference among all the Republican candidates."

Democratic officials said Biden will follow in the long-standing tradition of vice presidents playing the role of attack dog, allowing Obama to stay out of the fray and appear more focused on governing than campaigning.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy. The Obama campaign has been reluctant to publically define Biden's role in the re-election bid this early in the run, though campaign manager Jim Messina did say the vice president would deliver an economic message to appeal for support.

"You'll see him in communities across the country next year laying out the choice we face: restoring economic security for the middle class or returning to the same policies that led to our economic challenges," Messina said.

Democrats say Biden will campaign for House candidates in swing states as the party tries to recapture some of the seats in Congress lost during the 2010 midterms.

And here again, the vice president's efforts in politically crucial Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida could be most important. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is targeting 12 districts in those states that Obama and Biden carried in the 2008 presidential race but are represented by Republican representatives.

New York Rep. Steve Israel, who chairs the committee, said he believes Biden could be a "game-changer" in those districts.

"All he has to do is ask voters, has the Republican strategy of no worked for you?" Israel said.

Israel met with Obama and Biden at the White House earlier this month to discuss, among other things, their role in congressional campaigns. While Israel said he hopes Obama will actively campaign for Democratic House candidates, he said "the vice president has already volunteered."

Khodorkovsky hopes to see documentary on his fate (AP)

MOSCOW ? Jailed Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky has expressed hope of seeing a documentary about his conflict with the Kremlin that has premiered in Moscow.

Khodorkovsky said in a statement that he "hopes sooner or later" to see the film by German director Cyril Tuschi shown in Russia on Thursday, nine months after its European premiere.

The documentary describes the fate of Russia's richest man ? imprisoned since his arrest in 2003 on charges seen as punishment for challenging Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who was then president. A second conviction last year will keep Khodorkovsky incarcerated until 2016.

Tuschi said Russian distributors have refused to distribute his film due to "self-sensorship" and that the documentary will open in a handful of small, independent theaters.

Police, family search for missing Florida woman (AP)

ORLANDO, Fla. ? More than a dozen detectives and hundreds of volunteers continued their search Tuesday for an Orlando woman who went missing after her episode of "The People's Court" aired on television.

Orlando police said Michelle Parker, 33, was last seen Thursday, the day the episode aired. Her Hummer SUV was found the next day, causing family members to believe she was carjacked.

At a command center in the parking lot of a closed nightclub where Parker used to work, concerned residents stopped by for stacks of fliers on Tuesday afternoon, in the hopes of handing them out at shopping centers. People in white T-shirts with Parker's photo on the back scrutinized maps.

Family members last heard from her on Thursday, when she sent a text message that indicated she was in an Orlando shopping area. They said it's unlike Parker to disappear because she has three children and a job as a bartender.

"If anyone knows anything, please do the right thing," said Dustin Erickson, who choked up as he talked about his sister. "If anyone has any information, please come forward. If anyone has her, please let her go, please turn yourselves in, please do something so we can find her any way possible."

Erickson said the TV show was probably "irrelevant" to her disappearance as it was taped three months ago. Parker and her ex-boyfriend appeared on the show to resolve a dispute about a $5,000 engagement ring.

Her mother, Yvonne Stewart, told ABC News that her daughter said the show was "the most humiliating experience" of her life.

Myanmar's Suu Kyi to run in parliamentary polls (AP)

YANGON, Myanmar ? Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi intends to run for parliament in upcoming by-elections, a decision that was expected after her party decided last week to rejoin mainstream politics in long-isolated Myanmar.

Nyan Win, the spokesman of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, said Monday she has not yet decided which district she will seek to represent. But she "has the intention to stand for the elections," he told The Associated Press.

In a landmark development, the NLD decided on Friday to rejoin politics and register for future elections, signaling its confidence in recent reforms by the nominally civilian government that took power earlier this year.

The military-aligned ruling party won the November 2010 parliamentary elections held by the junta as part of its promise to introduce democracy and relinquish power after nearly five decades of military rule.

The NLD boycotted the elections because of a law that had prevented Nobel peace laureate Suu Kyi from running. The new government, however, later scrapped the law, allowing the NLD to take part in the political reforms now under way.

According to the new election law, a registered party is required to run for at least three seats in the legislature, made up of 224 members in the upper house and 440 members in the lower house. Of these, 48 seats are vacant for which special elections will be held, although no date has been set.

Suu Kyi had hinted on Friday that she would run for a parliamentary seat in the special elections, saying: "If one is engaged in politics, one has to do what is necessary. If I feel that I should take part in elections, I will participate."

She, however, cautioned that "the road ahead is full of difficulties and the road to democracy is endless."

Bringing Suu Kyi's party back into the fold would give the government greater legitimacy at home and abroad. It has already won cautious praise from international observers and critics, including the United States, for introducing reforms.

President Thein Sein, a former army officer, has shown a willingness to talk to Suu Kyi, lifted some restrictions on the media and the Internet, legalized unions and scrapped an unpopular dam project. Still, hundreds of political prisoners remain in jails.

Thein Sein has welcomed the NLD's decision to rejoin politics, saying it was "a positive signal."

Geekend steps its game up with a 24-hour Hackathon, promises boost to nerd cred

For the past two years, all sorts of gadget, social media and design geeks have descended upon Savannah, GA. The goal is clear: to spend the weekend hearing from the nerds they look up to, including our pal Major Nelson, who spoke back in 2009. This year was no different -- and to make things even more interesting -- event organizers invited attendees to participate in the first ever Geekend Hackathon. Teams of up to four members, fueled by a copious supply of Mountain Dew and pizza, were given 24 hours to come up with the most innovative desktop, mobile or web application they could. There was just one catch: teams had to incorporate at least three out of five key words that were randomly assigned to them. The only other stipulation was that if the code used to create each app wasn't already available online, they had to place the open source that they developed in a web repository before the event.

We were there to catch the results, which showcased a mixed bag of entertaining (and useful) applications. Projects ranging from an app tracking vegetable eating habits to one that uses image recognition to bring your favorite comics to a mobile device showed just what could be done in a day -- given enough caffeine, of course. Another allowed you to feed your urge to hug every cat, while a neighborhood advocacy community enabled concerned citizens to vote on issues in their area. Rounding out the field was a field trip database for teachers to share ideas on sites to take their students for the best experience. Two winners -- judge's choice and people's choice -- received a super geeky trophy (pictured above) and a major boost to their street...er online cred. If you're yearning to find out more about this year's happenings, hit the coverage link below and start booking your trip for next year.

South Korea shuts down for the all-or-nothing Korean SAT

Some 80 percent of Korea's high school students go on to further education. And to ensure students have the best chance, one day every year Korea changes its plane schedules, redirects traffic, and holds its breath.

So much rests on today's annual college entrance exam in South Korea that planes were grounded, roads were closed, and places of worship were thronged with parents praying for divine intervention as students plowed through its five separate sections for nine hours.

For the nearly 700,000 high schoolers on their way out of school taking the test this morning, this will determine what university they will go to (if any), their salary, and their future fate.

Such is the all-or-nothing emphasis pinned on gaining entry to one of a handful of the top higher education institutions in the country ? anchored in the so-called SKY (Seoul National, Korea and Yonsei universities) trinity ? that the entire Korean education system is geared toward success on this single day of the year.

Beyond college, a place at one of the top colleges is seen as a golden ticket to the?ultimate prize of a job at one of the country's top conglomerates such as Samsung, Hyundai, and LG.

But the pressure-laden path to the test, say critics, is one littered with some of South Korea's most glaring social ills. Though its education system is held up as a model around the world, with about 80 percent of high school students going on to college, South Korea harbors one of the world's most astronomical levels of private education costs forked out by parents intent on ensuring their children get ahead. And some have linked the test to some of the increasing number of teen suicides in the country.

One national newspaper columnist noted that this surge for a limited number of places at so few universities has also been linked to a spike in real estates prices in school districts with rumors of historically high pass rates.

The winds of change have been set in motion, however. President Lee Myung-bak wants companies to focus energies on recruiting high school graduates from vocational-focused places of learning in a bid to curb a rising youth unemployment rate.

South Korea's high university graduate rate leads to a bottleneck in the job market, pitting too many applicants in competition for a much smaller number of jobs. That, say experts, helps explain the country's high youth unemployment rate.

Whether Koreans will make the switch and value vocational educations, remains to be seen. For now, the exams are a "Korean rite of passage." Students are scheduled to find out what life holds in store for them on Nov. 30.

After week of turmoil, it's gameday at Penn State (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Athletes often talk of the playing field being their sanctuary, the one place they can go to shut out the distractions ? good and bad ? of real life.

If ever a team and its fans needed an escape, it is Penn State.

Still reeling from the child sex-abuse scandal that has rocked Penn State to its very core and cost Joe Paterno his job, the Nittany Lions' game against Nebraska on Saturday will be part pep rally, part cleansing.

"This is not about even a football team, or who coaches or doesn't coach," Gov. Tom Corbett said Friday after attending the board of trustees meeting.

It is about picking up the pieces.

Former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, once considered Paterno's heir apparent, is accused of sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year span, with several of the alleged assaults occurring on Penn State property. Two university officials are accused of perjury, and Paterno and president Graham Spanier were fired for not doing enough to prevent the alleged abuse.

This will be the first game in almost a half-century ? 46 years, to be exact ? that Paterno is not leading the Nittany Lions. Tom Bradley, Paterno's lead assistant on the field for the past 11 years, is serving as interim coach.

"We are obviously in a very unprecedented situation," Bradley said Thursday. "I just have to find a way to restore the confidence and to start a healing process with everybody."

The scandal would be damaging enough to a university that prides itself on its integrity. That it involved Paterno, major college football's winningest coach and the man who'd come to symbolize all that was good at Penn State, made it that much worse.

Thousands of angry students paraded through the streets after Paterno was fired Wednesday night, some throwing rocks and bottles and tipping over a TV news van.

"Having (Paterno) taken away from us made us feel lost," Leah Blasko, a junior from Pittsburgh, said at the candle light vigil held Friday night as a show of support for the alleged victims. "Tonight really gave us a place to put ourselves back together."

Saturday's game will be another step.

Instead of the usual "whiteout," Beaver Stadium is expected to be awash in blue in a sign of support for the alleged victims. Donations for two child-abuse prevention organizations are being accepted at the stadium gates. Other fund-raisers taking place have already raised more than $200,000.

"We are supporting the victims," said Kristie Winiarski, a senior from Doylestown, Pa., who was selling homemade baked goods Friday to raise money for Prevent Child Abuse Pennsylvania. "We want to show the world we can do more than riot."

State College police Capt. John Gardner promised a heavy police presence to deter a recurrence of the violence that occurred Wednesday night. There were already signs of it Friday night, with police officers walking up and down Beaver Avenue, a street popular with students because of its bars and restaurants.

Gardner said he does not anticipate any problems Saturday.

"I've got a lot of faith in the vast majority of Penn State and I think they're going to do the right thing," he said. "Come out, show support for the victims of this terrible scandal and enjoy themselves at a football game."

One person not expected to be there is Paterno, who has stayed out of sight since Wednesday night.

"That's Joe Paterno's decision," new Penn State president Rod Erickson said Friday when asked if he expected Paterno at the game. "Clearly he's welcome to come, as any other member of the public would be."

Tropical storm Sean further weakens in Atlantic (AP)

MIAMI ? Tropical Storm Sean continues to weaken after passing Bermuda and heading northeast into the Atlantic.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday evening that Sean had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph). It was about 300 miles (483 kilometers) northeast of Bermuda and moving northeast at 30 mph (48 kph).

Forecasters had discontinued the tropical storm warning for Bermuda.

Little change in strength is expected before Sean is absorbed by a frontal system Friday night or Saturday.

Swells generated by the storm also are affecting Bermuda with life-threatening surf and rip currents. The swells should subside in a day or two.

Marc Jacobs perfume ad banned in UK (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's advertising standards watchdog on Wednesday banned a Marc Jacobs perfume ad starring actress Dakota Fanning, saying it seemed to sexualize a child and could cause serious offense.

Four readers complained about the magazine ad for Jacobs' recently launched "Oh, Lola!" perfume, the Advertising Standards Authority said. The ad showed the 17-year-old star in a pale short dress, sitting with an oversized perfume bottle ? which is shaped like a vase holding a giant red flower ? between her legs.

The watchdog said that Fanning looked under 16 years old in the ad, and the styling in the image drew attention to her sexuality.

"Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualize a child," it said.

Perfume maker Coty UK said it had not received any complaints. It said that the ad was targeted at readers over 25 years old, and that while the image was provocative, it wasn't indecent. Most magazine readers would be used to "edgy images" in fashion magazines and are not likely to find the ad offensive, it added.

Fanning is best known as a child actress in movies including "I am Sam" and Steven Spielberg's TV series "Taken."

Broncos, Tebow run past Raiders

By JOSH DUBOW

updated 9:14 p.m. ET Nov. 6, 2011

OAKLAND, Calif. - Tim Tebow took the snap, put the ball in Willis McGahee's belly and decided whether to hand it off or keep it for his own run.

Those plays looked a lot like what he did so often in college ? especially the results.

Tebow threw two TD passes and ran for 117 yards, McGahee added 163 yards rushing and two more scores and the Denver Broncos beat the Oakland Raiders 38-24 Sunday.

Even though he looked far from a prototypical NFL quarterback relying on his legs much more than his arm, Tebow still managed to win for the second time in three starts this season and put the Broncos (3-5) one game out of first place in the AFC West.

"Honestly it doesn't necessarily matter too much how you drew it up as long as you get this feeling at the end, because it was pretty special," he said.

It's quite a turnaround from a week ago, when Denver was dismantled 45-10 by Detroit and some of the Lions were questioning Tebow's ability to succeed in the NFL. Broncos coach John Fox was only willing to commit to Tebow for this week's game. But after the coaches made a few tweaks to the offense, Tebow earned himself another start.

He threw touchdown passes to Eric Decker and Eddie Royal early in the game and then expertly ran the option game that helped the Broncos gain 298 yards on the ground, their highest total since a 300-yard game against Seattle in 2000, and most ever against the Raiders (4-4).

"As long as it worked, that's all I care about," McGahee said. "He did a great job as far as reading the ends on what he had to do as far as keeping it or giving it. When I got the ball it was my job just to get some yards."

McGahee had a 60-yard touchdown run that tied the game on the first play after Carson Palmer threw his second interception for the Raiders, then added a 24-yarder to ice it in the closing minutes. Denver took the lead in between those big runs when Royal returned his first punt of the season 85 yards for a touchdown.

Tebow finished 10 for 21 for 124 yards, but took only one sack after taking 13 in his first two starts.

"I thought he improved throwing the ball," Fox said. "I think he's always run the ball pretty effectively. He's very competitive by nature. You see evidence of that. Now it's just learning how to be an NFL quarterback. In my opinion he's gotten better each time out."

Palmer looked much better in his first start with the Raiders than in his debut two weeks ago in a relief effort against Kansas City. Then, he threw three second-half interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown in a 28-0 loss five days after he joined the team.

With a bye week and this past week to get acclimated to his new team, Palmer showed why Oakland dealt a 2012 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2013 second-rounder to Cincinnati to acquire Palmer after starter Jason Campbell broke his collarbone.

Palmer was 18 for 34 for 312 yards with three touchdowns. But he threw three more interceptions, including one that provided a sudden change of momentum in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

"It's kind of a crash course the last couple weeks," Palmer said. "It's like you're jamming or cramming for a final or a test. But I just got to continue to work, continue to study, continue to have it down and learn from every opportunity I get."

With the Raiders in Denver territory, Palmer threw high to Denarius Moore and Chris Harris intercepted the deflected ball. McGahee then ran through a big hole up the middle and outraced the Oakland defense for a 60-yard score. It tied the game on his longest run since a 77-yarder in Oakland in the 2009 season finale for Baltimore.

Tebow did little in the first half besides two big plays on one drive. First he ran 32 yards on an option keeper when former teammate Jarvis Moss bit on a fake.

"We knew exactly what they were going to do and we just didn't stop it," Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour said. "We knew exactly what was going to happen, and they ran exactly what we thought they were going to run and we didn't get the job done. That's the disappointing part."

Tebow then hit Decker on a 27-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-3. Tebow missed his share of open receivers but didn't miss Decker, who badly beat Michael Huff on a post route.

The Raiders capitalized on a botched punt to regain the lead. Britton Colquitt couldn't handle the low snap from Lonie Paxton and threw the ball away to avoid a sack in the end zone. That gave the Raiders a first down at the Denver 14 and Palmer found Michael Bush on an 11-yard score for his first TD with the Raiders.

Palmer bounced back from an interception later in the second quarter with his best pass as a Raider, threading a 40-yard touchdown pass to fullback Marcel Reece.

The Broncos missed a chance at three points at the end of the half when Fox too a field goal off the board to accept a roughing the kicker penalty on Taiwan Jones. Matt Prater then missed a 43-yarder at the end of the half.

Notes: The only other Broncos QB to rush for at least 100 yards in a game was Norris Weese with 120 in 1976 against Chicago. ... Denver DE Elvis Dumervil had his first sack since Dec. 27, 2009. Three Years Gone

Hello everyone. As the title suggests, I haven't been on this site in three years and my gosh has it changed! Things are looking fantastic; a tip of the hat to all who contributed to the developments. I'm returning now after a tumultuous time in my life that's finally settled down. It was surprising to find my account still here, but I'm thankful. The strange thing is it almost feels foreign, as if it doesn't belong to me. I suppose that happens after a while, but I'm sure things will get back to normal when I wipe off the dirt and dust. One last word before I scurry off into lurk-land, trying to figure out the new RP tab system: I'm sorry for suddenly disappearing on people who participated in my roleplays. It was a low thing to do. I hope to make it up to you, if you're still active. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I can't wait to become an active, dedicated member once more! :D

"Her hands, however, were not beautiful--perhaps a shade too red and a little hard in the fingers. She herself was too tall, and her figure lacked the soft, caressing outline. Her good point was her eyes. They were dark, but her long lashes made them seem black, and she looked at you frankly, with a sort of fearless candour."

DirecTV adds more subscribers than ever, will push live streaming, HD UI, and multiroom DVRs

The numbers are in for DirecTV's third quarter and it looks like Deion Sanders isn't just a HOF shutdown corner, he's also an excellent pitchman. The satellite company had a net addition of 327,000 subscribers in the US, which it credited to offering free NFL Sunday Ticket for the first year as a lure. Going forward, CEO Mike White says the company plans to maintain momentum with "DirecTV Anywhere" bringing live-TV streaming and VOD to customer's mobile devices (as seen in its iPad app), as well as the launch of a new HD UI and HR34-based home media center. Not mentioned? The DirecTiVo. Check out the rest of the details in the press release after the break, we'll listen in on the earnings call shortly to see if any other gems are dropped.

Greece scraps public vote on bailout plan

Greece's prime minister on Thursday abandoned his explosive plan to put a European rescue deal to popular vote, amid reports he has struck a deal with ministers to step down and hand power to a negotiated coalition government if they help him win a confidence vote on Friday.

Government sources with knowledge of a cabinet meeting told Reuters the ministers involved in the deal were led by Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

"He was told that he must leave calmly in order to save his party," one source told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "He agreed to step down. It was very civilized, with no acrimony."

The report could not immediately be verified.

Passionate squabbling in Athens left the country's solvency in doubt and the eurozone in turmoil.

Papandreou reversed course over the referendum after a rebellion within his own Socialist party.

Meanwhile, Greece's cost of borrowing ballooned, with the interest demanded by markets to buy Greek 10-year bonds exceeding 31 percent ? compared to 2 percent for European powerhouse Germany.

Video: Europe?s crisis threatens world economy (on this page)

Papandreou sparked a global crisis Monday when he announced he would put the latest European deal to cut Greece's massive debts ? a hard-fought accord that took months of negotiations ? to a referendum. The idea horrified other EU nations, Greece's creditors and financial markets as investors fretted over the prospect of Greece being forced into a disorderly default.

Papandreou was summoned to an emergency European meeting in Cannes, France, on Wednesday night, where the visibly irate French and German leaders said any referendum would in fact be a question of whether Greece retains its cherished membership of the 17-nation euro common currency. They also put on hold the next, vital payout of Greece's existing bailout until after a vote was held.

A Greek Finance Ministry official told the AP that Greece has cash until mid-December. After that, without the ?8 billion ($11 billion) disbursement, Greece would most likely be unable to service its debt or pay pensions and salaries.

Venizelos accompanied Papandreou to the Riviera but led a revolt against the referendum idea on his return to Athens before dawn Thursday.

With Greece's euro membership and bailout loan lifeline suddenly in danger, pressure mounted for Papandreou to resign. The conservative opposition and even his own deputies called for the creation of a transition government to pass the new European debt deal.

Video: At G20, Obama pushes for Eurozone crisis fix (on this page)

Venizelos said, as the opposition now indicated it would support the European debt deal, a referendum was no longer necessary.

"The government went to Cannes with the position that if the necessary consensus is formed there will be no need to hold a referendum," he said. "We must highlight the fact that there is a window of a consensus."

He said the new debt deal would be brought to parliament under a procedure that would require a reinforced majority of 180 out of the 300 lawmakers to vote in favor. With the governing Socialists holding 152 seats, that means the debt deal will only pass if the opposition also votes in favor.

But conservative opposition leader Antonis Samaras quickly dispelled any impression of unity, arguing that he had already agreed to back the vital deal, and demanded elections ? within the next six weeks if possible.

Europe's deepening crisis threatens U.S. economy

Papandreou "nearly pulled the universe apart to supposedly persuade me to agree to something that I had already said was unavoidable," he told parliament later Thursday, during a debate on the upcoming confidence vote.

"Mr. Papandreou pretends that he didn't understand what I told him," he said. "I called on him to resign."

Samaras then led his lawmakers in a dramatic walkout of the debate, without indicating whether he would vote in favor of the deal.

The drama in Greece sent immediate ripples throughout Europe. Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government in Italy was teetering as well Thursday after it failed to come up with a credible plan to deal with its dangerously high debts, and Portugal demanded more flexible terms for its own bailout. The European Central Bank made a surprise decision to cut interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point, to 1.25 percent, in an acknowledgment of the fragility of the continent's finances.

Talk of Greece also dominated the G-20 summit in the French resort of Cannes, where the leaders of the world's economic powerhouses gathered to solve Europe's debt crisis, which threatens to push the world back into recession.

During a summit break, French President Nicolas Sarkozy praised the Greek opposition's backing for the debt-crippled country's new bailout as "courageous and responsible."

Greece's new debt deal would give the country an extra ?130 billion ($179 billion) in rescue loans from the rest of the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund ? on top of the ?110 billion ($152 billion) it was granted a year ago. It would also see banks forgive Athens 50 percent of the money it still owes them. The goal is to reduce Greece's massive debts to the point where the country is able to handle its finances without constant bailouts.

Polls indicate the Greek public is close to the breaking point after more than 20 months of harsh austerity cuts and tax hikes. Recent opinion surveys show 90 percent opposing Papandreou's policies and his party polling just 20 percent public support.

Underlining that point, 300 people held a peaceful anti-austerity protest in central Athens late Thursday

The political drama continues Friday, when parliament will hold a confidence vote on the government. Papandreou's majority has been reduced to the bare minimum 151 after Socialist lawmaker Eva Kaili said she would not vote in favor.

"Tomorrow's vote is of particular significance, for the confidence vote provides a guarantee of how we will make our new steps ... and how we will talk with the opposition parties," Papandreou said.

The omens are poor: The two other European governments besides Greece that have received bailouts ? Portugal and Ireland ? have seen their governments fall during the economic turmoil.

Cancer Found in Mummy

By Miss Cellania in Health, History on Nov 2, 2011 at 10:46 am

An Egyptian mummy known as M1 is being studied at the National Archaeology Museum of Lisbon in Portugal. The 2,250-year-old male is thought to have have been between 51 and 60 years old when he died a slow, painful death from cancer.

Several post-mortem fractures, possibly produced by mishandling when the mummy was transported to Europe, afflicted the body.

But that wasn?t all they found. A pattern of round and dense tumors, measuring between 0.03 and 0.59 inches, interspersed M1?s pelvis and lumbar spine.

?The bone lesions were considered very suggestive of metastatic prostate cancer,? wrote the researchers.

Indeed, prostatic carcinoma typically spreads to the pelvic region, the lumbar spine, the upper arm and leg bones, the ribs, ultimately reaching most of the skeleton.

Prates and colleagues considered other diseases as alternatives. But M1?s sex, age, the distribution pattern of the lesions, their shape and density, strongly argued for prostate cancer.

Only one older case of prostate cancer has ever been found, in a 2,700-year-old skeleton from Siberia. Read more at Discovery News. Link -via Breakfast Links

New Libyan PM was Alabama professor for 20 years (AP)

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? For 20 years, Abdurrahim el-Keib taught electrical engineering at the University of Alabama, helped lead the area's Muslim community and talked little about his home country of Libya. With Moammar Gadhafi's regime deposed, the professor now has a new role as prime minister of his homeland.

El-Keib was elected to the post late Monday by Libya's National Transitional Council and will replace outgoing interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril, who had promised to step down after victory over Gadhafi's dictatorship. His selection suggests the country's interim rulers may be seeking out a government leader palatable both to the West and to Libyans who distrust anyone connected to the former regime.

El-Keib holds a doctorate in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University, where he also taught, and moved to Alabama in 1985, according to a biography posted by a former employer, the Petroleum Institute in the United Arab Emirates.

Online documents show el-Keib was at the University of Alabama for 20 years, becoming involved with the Faculty Senate and serving as a speaker representing Muslims to other faith communities in the city after the 9/11 terror attacks on New York and Washington.

The professor spoke at a Christian church in Tuscaloosa about the beliefs of Muslims in January 2002, and longtime friend Mirza Beg said el-Keib helped raise money for a new Islamic center that opened in Tuscaloosa more than a decade ago, near the university's football stadium.

"He was the leading force behind it," said Beg, a chemist with the groundwater assessment program at the Geological Survey of Alabama. "Some people have a knack for management. He collected money for it from friends, from people here, from people in the Mideast, from all over."

Beg, a native of India, said he and el-Keib worked together on the project and became better friends after the 9/11 attacks as they served as informal liaisons between Tuscaloosa's Muslims and people of other faiths.

Beg said he knew el-Keib had "political abilities," but he said his friend rarely discussed Libya.

"The reasons were obvious. It was a dictatorship, and it was not comfortable for him to talk about because his extended family lived there," Beg said.

El-Keib lived in the United States for more than 30 years during Gadhafi's reign, Beg said, and the two men had little contact since el-Keib left the university in 2005. He later worked as a professor and chairman of the electrical engineering department at The Petroleum Institute, according to the resume posted by the school.

Tim Haskew, who worked with el-Keib at the University of Alabama and is now interim head of its electrical engineering department, said el-Keib was "well-received" by students there.

"He took care of his classes, did his contract work, graduated his students," Haskew said.

While el-Keib was at North Carolina State University, his adviser John Grainger recalled him as a devout Muslim who dedicated his doctoral thesis to Allah. El-Keib talked little about the politics of his homeland and never visited Libya during his time in Raleigh, Grainger told The Associated Press by telephone.

"He was afraid to go back to Libya," Grainger said. "He would go to Morocco and his family would meet him for visits. We never got into any big discussion about why he was afraid. All he said was the environment wasn't good for him there."

Grainger recalled visiting el-Keib's home during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when el-Keib and his wife would serve food to guests but not eat until it was time to break the daily fast.

"He does carry himself very well," Grainger added. "He was quite a debonair fellow in the sense of being refined."

When Grainger heard that his former student had been named prime minister of the new government, it gave him hope that the post-Ghadafi forces in the country were serious about finding capable leaders. Still, he knows el-Keib has a formidable challenge ahead.

"He's a quiet fellow but he really did have a great sense of humor," Grainger said. "And that's what he's going to need from now on."

Illinois power broker guilty in extortion plot (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? An Illinois power broker accused of trying to extort a campaign donation for disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich was convicted of corruption charges by a federal jury on Tuesday.

William Cellini, a longtime state capital lobbyist and Republican fundraiser, was accused of trying to get the campaign donation for Blagojevich, a Democrat, to keep his own power over a state pension board.

His victim in the extortion plot was Thomas Rosenberg, a Hollywood producer who won an Oscar for the film "Million Dollar Baby."

Cellini's trial is the last one related to the former two-term Illinois governor, who was thrown out of office in 2009.

Blagojevich was convicted in two separate trials, with the second in June finding him guilty of attempting to trade President Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate seat for financial and political gain.

Cellini was convicted of conspiracy to commit extortion and aiding and abetting solicitation of a bribe, but was acquitted of attempted extortion and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.

He faces a maximum of 20 years on the extortion count and 10 years on the bribery count.

Sentencing for Blagojevich, originally set for October 6, has been postponed with no new date set, according to Randall Samborn, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office.

Blagojevich could face a lengthy sentence on 18 convictions on fraud, bribery and lying to investigators.

PFT's 10-pack: Super Bowl rematch coming?

Super Bowl XLVGetty Images

It?s the midpoint of the season, sort of.? Eight weeks are in the books, but only eight teams have played eight games.? For the other 24, the season won?t hit the turn until next week.

And while we?re starting to get a feel for the good teams and the bad teams and the in-between teams, the any-given-Sunday vibe remains alive and well ? and the fortunes of teams can change quickly, for good or bad.

Until we crown a champion, we can dabble only in a series of snapshots as to where teams are right now.? Here are 10 of them, plenty of which may fade to black by the time January rolls around.

1.? Super Bowl rematch coming?

In August, as teams scrambled to slap together game-ready rosters without the benefit of an offseason program or traditional two-a-day workouts, it was believed that the teams who played deep into the 2010 season would have a real benefit.

And the two teams that played the deepest presumably had the biggest benefit.

From the start, the Packers showed that they?d be able to pick up right where they left off.? For the Steelers, they needed a month to find their groove, but they?ve found it in a huge way, with four straight wins punctuated by a table-turning, trend-reversing victory over Tom Brady and the Patriots, highlighted by defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau?s long-con rope-a-dope in which he convinced the Pats based on years of stubbornness that the defense wouldn?t change despite chronic struggles against offenses that spread things out and quarterbacks that could make decisions faster than the Steelers could get to the quarterbacks.

Now, nearly two months into the season, the Steelers and Packers appear to be on a collision course for a rematch, 18 years after the last time the two Super Bowl teams got back together for a second straight year.

Yes, everything is subject to change.? But when the dust settles on the 2011 season, there?s a chance that, at the very top, there will be no change at all.

2.? Eagles may have something to say about that.

After Sunday night?s thrashing of the Cowboys, there?s a new team that could disrupt Green Bay?s run to the Super Bowl.? And it?s the team that many were ready to hand the Lombardi without even playing the season.

The Eagles finally put it together on both sides of the ball in that 34-7 win over the Cowboys, and if the Eagles can keep it up they could beat the Packers in Green Bay in January.

Tony Dungy of Football Night in America pointed out after the game that the Eagles match up well with the Packers.? Indeed, the Eagles nearly knocked off the Packers in the wild-card round last year.

This year, the Eagles would be the underdog.? It?s a role they seem to relish much more than being dubbed a Dream Team.

3.? Ravens may have something to say about it, too.

Yes, they lost to the Jaguars a week ago.? Yes, they fell behind the Cardinals by three touchdowns on Sunday.? But the Ravens still have the pieces to put together a deep run into the playoffs, and they play up (and, unfortunately for them, down) to the level of the competition.

The Ravens match up well with the best teams in the conference, as long as they can get past the Steelers.? And they can go a long way toward getting past the Steelers if they can beat them next Sunday night in Pittsburgh.

Either way, the Steelers and Ravens seem destined to play again in January, for the third time in four years.? And the Ravens could be the only AFC team that could defeat the Steelers come the postseason, whether the game is played in Maryland or Pennsylvania.

4.? Tony Dungy said it the right way.

On Sunday, Bill Cowher said he doesn?t ?plan? to coach next year, and that he ?plans? to be in the same seat at CBS next year.? It?s a different twist on Jon Gruden?s approach to keeping his name out of circulation during a season.? Gruden signed an ?exclusive? contract with ESPN, and ESPN won?t say whether ?exclusive? means he can?t leave the network for a coaching job.

Neither man has said unequivocally that he won?t be coaching in 2012.? Tony Dungy showed them how to do it during Football Night in America, stating without doubt or ambiguity or wiggle words that he won?t be coaching next year.

So until Cowher and Gruden follow suit, they?ll be regarded as potential candidates for coaching jobs once January comes around.

5.? Chris Johnson is doing it the wrong way.

It?s hard to pinpoint the reasons for Titans running back Chris Johnson?s struggles.? Apart from the holdout and the new offense and the new offensive coordinator and the new quarterback, one thing is clear:? Johnson lacks the explosiveness that we used to see on a weekly basis.

It was obvious today when Johnson caught a pass and had some space with which to operate, after weeks of taking a handoff and being swallowed up by defenders before he could make it to daylight.? The old Chris Johnson would have rocketed to the endzone untouched.? The new Chris Johnson was swallowed up by defenders.

Something?s wrong with Johnson, and the question isn?t whether he?ll get it back this year.? The question is whether he?ll get it back ever.

6.? Time for a new position for Tebow.

I?ll admit it.? I was caught up in the Tebow story from last week.? Making the dramatic closing moments of the home-away-from-home game at Miami even more compelling was the fact that Tebow had been so terribly awful in the three-plus quarters before the offense woke up.

But Tebow managed to take down one of the worst teams in the league.? Sunday?s game at home against the Lions showed that Tebow simply isn?t ready to be an NFL quarterback.

It?s easy to say that he?s a work in progress.? But not every unfinished painting becomes a masterpiece.? Tebow, once fully developed, could be a .500 quarterback at best.

And that means it?s time for the Broncos to consider their alternatives.? The ultimate team player probably would move to a new position, especially if no other team wants to let him play quarterback.? But maybe it simply won?t work to take a guy who had been a quarterback and move him to a new spot on the same team.? Maybe the Broncos simply need to dump him after the season.

Either way, this experiment is well on its way to failing.? After a few more weeks ? and a few more damning columns in the hometown paper ? the Tebowmaniacs in Denver likely will agree.

7.? Temporary end of the bye-week blues.

Through Week Seven, teams emerging from byes were 3-9.? In Week Eight, the teams with byes last Sunday won five and lost only one.

It was believed that the five days off mandated by the labor agreement had been a factor in the 25-percent winning percentage.? But now, with the total success rate up to 40 percent, it?s hard to tell whether the time off actually hurts.

It definitely didn?t hurt the Eagles, especially since Andy Reid is now 13-0 after the regular-season bye.

Moving forward, count on the teams that lost to look at the things done by the teams that won in the hopes of finding a way to win after the bye week in 2012.

8.? Breaking a ?Suck for Luck? deadlock.

So with the Colts at 0-8 and the Dolphins at 0-7 and their paths not crossing in 2011, plenty of readers have asked for more information about the procedure that would apply if the two teams finish 0-16.

Several times in recent years, draft order has been determined by a coin flip.? So could the ability to draft Andrew Luck be determined by a rudimentary game of chance?

In this case, that most likely won?t happen, since the Colts and Dolphins are in the same conference.

First, the strength of schedule would compared.? That means the total wins and losses of the Colts? opponents would be compared to the total wins and losses of the Dolphins? opponents.? If the numbers are the same, the process would move on to the next step.

Second, the division or conference tie-breakers apply, if applicable.? In other words, the various steps that would be used to determine a wild-card berth would be employed to determine the ?better? (and thus the ?worse?) team.? This would ultimately bring into play the following specific and detailed factors that surely would produce a winner (i.e. loser):? best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed; best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed; best net points in conference games; best net points in all games; best net touchdowns in all games.

If each of those steps results in a tie, the final step would be a coin flip.? But, surely, the two teams won?t tie on each of those specific factors.

Coin flips for draft picks happen when the two tied teams are in different conferences.? In those cases, the factors are strength of schedule and coin flip.

So in a Colts-vs.-Dolphins showdown for Luck, someone will ?win? the pick based on losing as to one of the various factors listed above.

9.? ?Skins could make a run for Luck.

Though they have three wins, the Redskins? performance over the past several weeks suggests they won?t have many more.? And that could cause the Redskins to plunge toward the Andrew Luck splash zone.

Even if the Redskins lose the rest of their games, they most likely won?t ?earn? the top pick.? Still, the closer they are to the top of the order, the less it will take to finish the climb via trade.

And if Luck decides he doesn?t want to play for the team that finishes in the first spot, and if he determines that he?d like to play for the Redskins, who knows?? Mike Shanahan could get the best quarterback since the one with whom Shanahan won a pair of Super Bowls in Denver.

10.? League needs to expand reviewable plays.

As the NFL gradually expands its use of instant replay, the league needs to be willing to consider whether further changes are needed.? The most recent tweak to the system seems to cry out for a more radical overhaul.

Late in the Patriots-Steelers game, with New England trailing by six, quarterback Tom Brady was hit, forcing a fumble.? During the scramble for the ball, safety Troy Polamalu dove for it, deftly slapping the thing hard across the goal line.? The ball ultimately rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety.? In real time and at full speed, it was hard to see that Polamalu whacked the ball toward the two-pointer.? The replays revealed that Polamalu had indeed pushed the ball into the end zone.

But when referee Mike Carey reviewed the play, since it involved a score, Carey had no power to overturn the non-call on the field as it related to Polamalu?s punching of the ball, because that specific action is not on the pre-set list of reviewable plays.

Though the play would have been subject to a booth-initiated review even if it had happened before the 2011 season, given that it happened in the final two minutes of the game, the league?s expanded commitment to getting it right compels the league to ditch the list of specifically reviewable actions and to make everything reviewable, with specific exceptions carved out.

If the overriding goal is indeed to get it right, the league should exempt from review only those judgment calls made based on a three-dimensional observation of the action that can?t and shouldn?t be second-guessed by a two-dimensional representation of it.? Other than pass interference and the question of whether a receiver was in the vicinity of a pass being assessed for intentional grounding, there are few (and possibly no) pure judgment calls.? Thus, once the referee goes under the hood to review a play, he should be able to change the outcome based on anything he sees that should have been seen in real time.

The concern about prolonging the game shouldn?t matter.? If, on scoring plays and all plays occurring with fewer than two minutes in each half, the referee watches the entire play for anything that could be overturned, the delay already has been injected into the process.? The only remaining question is whether the referee will be permitted to fix any error that he sees.
