Brightcove Open Sources App Cloud, Bets Big On Dual-Screen Apps For Apple TV

brightcoveIt was just a year ago that video distribution specialist Brightcove announced it was entering a new market, with a cloud-based product for quickly building multiplatform mobile applications called App Cloud. Well at this year's annual Play conference, Brightcove will make App Cloud available for free with an open source license. It's also making a set of tools available that it hopes will push forward the dual-screen applications market. Brightcove's App Cloud is basically like a WYSIWYG editor for app development, designed to allow developers to roll out rich apps for both iOS and Android mobile phones and tablets with a minimum amount of actual programming required. App Cloud provides templates to get developers up and running quickly, but which can also be customized with native code. Once built, App Cloud also contains Brightcove's Workshop debugging tool, so that users can test and preview apps natively on the device and make changes in real-time, before submitting to the App Store or Google Play.

Swine flu pandemic killed 15 times more than thought

The swine flu pandemic of 2009 has been derided as a "wimp" pandemic. Well, how's this for wimp: it probably killed 284,400 people ? eight times the number officially reported ? within its first 12 months of touring the world.

Because few cases are tested, we know the official numbers were an underestimate. But Fatimah Dawood of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, and a host of colleagues around the world sought to derive the global toll by putting together confirmed measurements of rates of infection at 17 places in 13 countries, poor and rich, together with known variations in death rates in rich and poor countries.

In fact, uncertainties in the data mean deaths might have been much higher than 284,400 ? they might have reached some 575,400. A normal seasonal flu takes 250,000 to 500,000 lives a year globally but, crucially, 87 per cent of the pandemic dead were people younger than 65. In ordinary winters, 90 per cent of flu deaths are in people aged 65 or over.

That means the years of life lost to the pandemic were a staggering 9.7 million globally ? 3.4 times as many as during a regular flu season.

Five million of those lost years were in Africa and Southeast Asia, due to higher death rates from respiratory infections. Dawood's team says this shows how much more flu vaccine and antiviral drugs are needed in those regions. Supplies for both are currently low to non-existent in both places.

"This is a good analysis" and is probably a good rough estimate of the deaths from the pandemic, says Lone Simonsen of George Washington University in Washington DC, who wrote an accompanying commentary. But the analysis is based on generalising the measured rates of infection and death from a few countries to other countries, which inevitably involves uncertainty. In particular, says Simonsen, the relative likelihood of someone dying once they are infected is hard to get right, and may have been underestimated for "middle income" countries such as Mexico.

Simonsen is involved in another study, also involving the CDC, which will look at real data for pandemic deaths in more than a dozen countries that have such measurements. The problem, says Simonsen, is that many countries do not have such measurements, and those that do can take time to collect the numbers ? even US figures became available only a few months ago.

Journal reference: The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Dawood's paper: DOI: 10.1016/S1473-3099(12)70121-4; Simonsen's commentary: DOI: 10.1016/S1473-3099(12)70152-4

Pa. Catholic official convicted of endangerment

Brennan, and other accused predators, in ministry. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)

(AP) ? A Roman Catholic church official was convicted Friday of child endangerment but acquitted of conspiracy in a groundbreaking clergy-abuse trial, becoming the first U.S. church official convicted of a crime for mishandling abuse claims.

Monsignor William Lynn helped the archdiocese keep predators in ministry, and the public in the dark, by telling parishes their priests were being removed for health reasons and then sending the men to unsuspecting churches, prosecutors said.

Lynn, 61, had faced about 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted of all three counts he faced ? conspiracy and two counts of child endangerment. He was convicted only on one of the endangerment counts, leaving him with the possibility of 3 1/2 to seven years in prison.

The jury could not agree on a verdict for Lynn's co-defendant, the Rev. James Brennan, who was accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy.

Lynn has been on leave from the church since his arrest last year. He served as secretary for clergy from 1992 to 2004, mostly under Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua.

No matter the verdict, the trial exposed how deeply involved the late cardinal was in dealing with accused priests. Rarely an hour of testimony went by without Bevilacqua's name being invoked.

Bevilacqua had the final say on what to do with priests accused of abuse, transferred many of them to new parishes and dressed down anyone who complained, according to testimony. He also ordered the shredding of a 1994 list that warned him that the archdiocese had three diagnosed pedophiles, a dozen confirmed predators and at least 20 more possible abusers in its midst. Prosecutors learned this year that a copy had been stashed in a safe.

Lynn didn't react when the verdict was read and remained sitting in his chair, his head lowered, even when the judge took a brief recess to thank the jury. He also didn't acknowledge the dozen or so family members, some of whom were weeping, sitting behind him in the gallery.

The judge ordered that Lynn's bail be revoked and he was led to jail. The judge said she would at some point entertain a motion for house arrest.

With the verdict, jurors concluded that prosecutors failed to show that Lynn was part of a conspiracy to move predator priests around.

The jury, however, did find that Lynn endangered the victim of defrocked priest Edward Avery, who pleaded guilty before trial to a 1999 sexual assault.

Lynn had deemed Avery "guilty" of an earlier complaint by 1994, and helped steer him into an inpatient treatment program run by the archdiocese. But Lynn knew that Avery later was sent to live in a northeast Philadelphia parish, where the altar boy was assaulted.

Karen Polesir, a spokeswoman for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests who was outside the courthouse, said it was a historic trial because it revealed "the abuse and the cover-ups that have been going on in the Philadelphia archdiocese for a long time."

She said her immediate reaction to the verdict was tears.

"I'm brokenhearted for all the victims that were brave enough to come forward, and the whistleblowers that were brave enough to come forward," Polesir said. "I'm glad for the one count of guilty, but that is not enough to vindicate the victims and survivors. I feel that there was overwhelming evidence against Monsignor Lynn and that the decision is just heartbreaking."

Defense lawyers say Lynn alone tried to document the complaints, get priests into treatment and alert the cardinal to the growing crisis. Church documents show therapists had called one accused priest a ticking "time bomb" and "powder keg."

During the 10-week trial, more than a dozen adults testified about wrenching abuse they said they suffered at the hands of revered priests.

A former seminarian said he was raped by a priest throughout high school at the priest's mountain house.

A nun testified that she and two female relatives were sexually abused by a priest described by a church official as "one of the sickest people I ever knew."

A troubled young man described being sexually assaulted in the church sacristy in 1999 by Avery after the 10-year-old altar boy served Mass. Avery is serving a 2 1/2- to five-year prison term.

"I can't explain the pain, because I'm still trying to figure it out today, but I have an emptiness where my soul should be," another accuser testified. His mother had sent him to a priest for counseling as an eighth-grader because he'd been raped by a family friend. The priest then followed suit, he said.

Seven men and five women sat on the jury, along with eight alternates. Many have ties to Catholic schools or parishes, but said they could judge the case fairly. There are about 1.5 million Catholics in the five-county archdiocese, and Philadelphia neighborhoods were long identified by their local parishes.

Defense lawyers called the decision to send Lynn to prison overly harsh, given his ties to the community and lack of any prior criminal record. They said they would move for house arrest on Monday. Lynn will spend at least the weekend in a Philadelphia jail.

"He's upset. He's crushed. He's in custody and he didn't want anything else but to help kids," defense lawyer Jeffrey M. Lindy said.

Brennan, Lynn's co-defendant, was accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy in 1996. With the jury unable to agree, the judge declared a mistrial on the attempted rape and child endangerment charges against him.

Lynn's lawyer, Thomas Bergstrom, pledged in opening statements in late March that the monsignor would not run from the sins of the church. However, he said in closing arguments that Lynn should not be held responsible for them.

He suggested his client was a middle manager-turned-scapegoat for the clergy-abuse scandal. Lynn, he said, documented the abuse complaints and did his best to get reluctant superiors to address it.

"And now, now of all things, the commonwealth wants you to convict him for documenting the abuse that occurred in the archdiocese, .... the evil that other men did. They want to hold him responsible for their sins."

Philadelphia prosecutors have been investigating the archdiocese for 10 years, since the national crisis erupted in the Boston archdiocese. Lynn testified several times before a grand jury that sat from about 2002 to 2005.

That panel produced a blistering report that identified 63 suspected child molesters in the archdiocese, but said no one could be charged because of legal time limits.

Afterward, then-District Attorney Lynne Abraham helped fight for state reforms that gave reluctant victims more time to come forward in Pennsylvania ? and enabled her successor, Seth Williams, to charge Monsignor Lynn and four others last year based on more recent complaints.

In a hotly contested ruling in Lynn's case, Common Pleas Judge M. Teresa Sarmina let prosecutors tell jurors about 20 of the accused priests named in the first grand jury report, even though they were never charged, because Lynn worked on their files to some extent.

Prosecutors said they showed a pattern at the archdiocese of lying about why priests were removed, sending them to "company doctors" at church-run therapy centers and failing to warn new parishes where they were later transferred.

"They put so many innocent children in danger," Assistant District Attorney Patrick Blessington said in his closing remarks, noting that it can take years or decades for victims to come forward. "That's what's so scary about this. We have no idea how many victims are out there."

By Bergstrom's count, the commonwealth spent about 36 of 40 trial days on the tangential cases.

An appeal based on the inclusion of that evidence is considered likely.

Hawaii Gov.: Oracle's Ellison to buy most of Lanai

HONOLULU (AP) ? Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison has reached a deal to buy 98 percent of the island of Lanai from its current owner, Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said Wednesday.

The land's owner, Castle & Cooke Inc., filed a transfer application with the state's public utilities commission, which regulates utilities on the island that serve its two resorts.

The sale price for the property, which comprises the vast majority of the island's 141 square miles, was not immediately clear. Lawyers for the seller redacted a copy of the sale agreement signed May 2, saying it includes confidential information that would competitively hurt Ellison and the seller if disclosed. The Maui News previously reported the asking price was between $500 million and $600 million.

Self-made billionaire David Murdock, who owns Castle & Cooke, said he would keep his home on Lanai and the right to build a wind farm, a controversial project that would place windmills on as many as 20 square miles of the island and deliver power to Oahu through an undersea cable.

Murdock said in a statement that selling Lanai was not an impulsive decision, but he has been looking for a buyer who would have the right enthusiasm, commitment and respect for the island's residents.

"I have learned in life that change is inevitable and can be quite positive when guided in the right direction," Murdock said.

Attempts to reach a representative for Ellison through Oracle were not successful after business hours Wednesday.

Ellison co-founded the Redwood City, Calif.-based business software company in 1977. Forbes ranks him as the world's sixth-richest person, with a net worth of $36 billion as of March.

Abercrombie said Ellison has had a longstanding interest in the island.

"We look forward to welcoming Mr. Ellison in the near future," Abercrombie said. "His passion for nature, particularly the ocean is well known specifically in the realm of America's Cup sailing," he said.

Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa wished Murdock well and said he looks forward to meeting Ellison.

The deal involves 88,000 acres of land, plus two resorts, two golf courses, a stable and various residential and commercial buildings, lawyers for Murdock told the utilities commission in its application.

Ellison plans to pay cash, and the deal should result in new jobs, economic stimulus and a reinvigorated local tourism industry, the application said.

"The buyer anticipates making substantial investments in Lanai and is looking forward to partnering with the people of Lanai to chart the island's future," Castle & Cooke lawyers said in the application.

Lanai is Hawaii's smallest publicly accessible inhabited island, with some 3,200 residents. It is known as the "pineapple island" even though Murdock closed its pineapple operations to make way for luxury resort and home development. The majority of the island was once owned by James Dole of Dole Food Company Inc., who bought it in 1922.

Murdock bought out fellow Castle & Cooke shareholders for nearly $700 million in 2000 and took the company private.

The island boasts unspoiled charm with 30 miles of paved roads, 400 miles of unpaved roads and no traffic lights. According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, more than 26,000 people visited the island from January to April of this year, a 6 percent decline from the same period last year.

The utilities commission is reviewing the prospective deal because it involves indirectly transferring public utilities Castle & Cooke owns on the island ? a water company, a bus and shuttle service, and the island's wastewater utility. Castle & Cooke asked for interim approval by June 26.

Hawaii law requires commission approval to transfer public utilities, and the commission will try to make its decision by that date, said Sean Mikell of the PUC's research division, which is considering the application. The commission does not have jurisdiction over the sale of the island, aside from the transfer of public utilities.

J. Kalani English, a state senator who represents Lanai in Hawaii's Legislature, said he's hopeful the sale to Ellison will mean a return of agriculture to the island.

"I'm relieved because he's one of the richest people on the planet, which means he knows he'll lose a lot of money in the beginning and he can sustain that," said English, a Democrat.

English said Ellison has been known to vacation on Lanai.

Robin Kaye, president of Friends of Lanai, said he wasn't surprised to hear who the buyer is because Ellison's name has been floating around the island lately.

Before Murdock announced he would keep wind farm rights on the island, Kaye said he hoped Ellison wouldn't pursue the project.

"Lanai is worth more than supplying power to Oahu," Kaye said.

Seventh-generation Lanaian Sol Kahoohalahala said he hopes to see an end to high unemployment and more opportunities for economic development beyond tourism.

"I look at this as a potential opportunity for us to get the new owner to look at Lanai in terms of an island that needs to work at sustaining itself," he said. "Tourism cannot be the only economic engine on Lanai."

Kahoohalaha's family managed to hold on to some Lanai land. The 2 percent Ellison isn't buying is owned by the state, county and private residents.

Justin Bieber Headed For Year's Biggest Debut With Believe

Singer's second full-length studio album of original material predicted to sell more than 410,000.
By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jocelyn Vena

<P><P>You'd be a fool to expect <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> to debut anywhere but the #1 spot on the <I>Billboard</I> 200 album chart next week. But experts are predicting that not only will JB top the tally, but he's headed for his best first-week ever and the likely crown of the year's biggest debut. According to <a href="http://www.billboard.com/#/news/justin-bieber-kenny-chesney-headed-for-top-1007386952.story?utm_source=most_recent" target="_blank"><I>Billboard</I></a>, <a href="/news/articles/1685471/justin-bieber-believe-track-list.jhtml"><I>Believe</I></a>&#8232; is on course to move between 410,000-440,000 units by the end of the reporting week on Sunday. If Bieber reaches those heights, he will move past the year's biggest debut to date, Madonna's <I>MDNA</I>, which opened with 359,000. Those kinds of numbers would also give Bieber his biggest first frame so far, beating the debut of 2010's <I>My World 2.0</I>, which moved 291,000 units in its first week.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Lights Up New York Fans" id="vid:793032.id:1687833" width="415" height="255"></div><p> Before the expected numbers hit, Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, was already feeling bullish about the prospects. "I think it's gonna do well because I think people are really giving it a shot," he said of the album that <a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20603635,00.html" target="_blank">critics</a> have been praising for its maturity. "At the same time, I think that's my biggest hope that people judge him on the music. That they go and they listen to the album and they don't go in with any expectations. There's a lot of hype around him because of who he is and just shut your eyes, put on your headphones, and put on the music and then just decide if this album is worthy of your time." Maybe he's a bit biased (okay, of course he is), but Braun said that if people follow his advice and give Bieber a fair shake, "I think nine-and-three-fourths out of 10 people will say yes." We will find out on Wednesday when the new <I>Billboard</I> 200 is revealed.</p></p>

Late-night poll: Did the Microsoft Surface get you interested?

Surface

Microsoft came back to life this evening, at least for a little bit. They showed off their latest idea, namely the Microsoft Surface, and have made a pretty big splash on the Interwebz. It's not quite what we expected from a Windows 8 tablet, but for the most part Microsoft delivered (or will be delivering) what a lot of people were asking for -- some parity between the desktop and mobile. Be sure to read the front page of WPCentral to see all there is to see about the Microsoft Surface.

But is it too little, too late? Let's be honest, Windows Phone 7 looks pretty damn nice. It's still behind the curve in some features, but there's nothing there that we can look at and say, "I understand why it's not selling -- XXX is horrible." People just don't seem to be interested on the same level they are with Android and iOS. Believe it or not, that makes us sad -- a strong third player means the top two have to try harder, and we benefit when they try harder. But today's news was different it seems. People were excited about a Microsoft product again.

So what say you, loyal readers and late-night poll respondents? Did you see anything to get excited about? Tell us in tonight's poll.

Shoe Inserts Provides Relief in Chronic Pains in the Legs and back?

If you are suffering from chronic pains in the feet, legs, and even the back then shoe inserts or foot orthotics is the best solution for you. This may be surprising, for how can the trouble in the feet reach the back, right?? Well, that?s the truth.? This is so because our body is made up of connected parts.? When something goes wrong with one part, it automatically affects the other one.

Foot insoles can be very helpful in protecting and providing comfort to the people suffering from foot problems including the one suffering from diabetes and arthritis. Patients suffering from any of these disease have very sensitive feet, thus using some cushioning devices can help a big deal to alleviate pain caused by over sensitivity.

Orthotics, especially the customized ones, are resilient and lightweight.

They ease the pressure on the arches and the balls so the person can find better balance and support for his or her weight.

Apart from arthritic and diabetic patients, shoe inserts performs valuable role in the life of the people suffering from the condition called plantar fasciitis.? This is when the connective tissue, the fascia, is stretched excessively and gets swollen or inflamed.? Sometimes the fascia could also get torn. ?The pain may move from the feet, to the knees, and then to the lower back. ?When this happens, foot insoles can provide support and cushioning to alleviate the pains.

If you are continuously experiencing chronic leg and back pains and the probable causes don?t exist, then you need to try out some orthoses.? If your work requires you to stand or walk a lot, there are fair chances that you may abuse your feet. Buy a pair of shoe inserts and experience the difference yourself . Again, these insoles may be prefabricated as well as custom-made.? Depending on your priorities, needs, and budget, you can select the one.

HBT: Cocaine charges for ex-Yankees prospect Taylor

As if Brien Taylor?s story wasn?t sad enough when injuries from a bar fight turned him from elite pitching prospect to bust, the former Yankees No. 1 overall pick has been indicted on three counts of distributing crack cocaine.

Taylor is now 40 years old and the Associated Press reports that he was indicted in North Carolina following a March arrest for allegedly ?selling large quantities of cocaine and crack cocaine to an undercover narcotics agent over a span of several months.?

He?s two decades removed from getting a $1.55 million signing bonus and Taylor ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on Baseball America?s annual prospect list in 1992 and 1993. He never pitched in the majors and in fact never even made it to Triple-A.

Canada to join Trans-Pacific trade talks

Reuters | June 19, 2012 | 04:44 PM EDT

LOS CABOS, Mexico (Reuters) - Canada will join 10 other nations in talks aimed at creating an Asia Pacific free trade agreement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced on Tuesday, part of a bid to reduce reliance on the U.S. market in favor of fast-growing emerging economies.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership talks are aimed at creating a free-trade zone with a combined population of 658 million people and a gross domestic product of more than C$20 trillion ($19.65 trillion).

"This is a further example of our determination to diversify our exports and to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for Canadian families," Harper told reporters in the Mexican beach resort of Los Cabos on the sidelines of a G20 summit.

The deal will likely increase pressure on Canada to scrap a farm support program that other countries see as protectionist. Canada limits domestic production of dairy, poultry and eggs to match demand, and high tariffs are imposed on imports to protect farmers, a scheme considered unfair by competitors but one that has been politically sacrosanct.

Many of Canada's farmers consider supply management essential to their survival since it allows them to compete against much larger U.S. competitors. Defending supply management has always been Canadian government policy.

(AP) ? Saudi royal officials received the body of Crown Prince Nayef Abdul-Aziz in Jiddah on Sunday after a flight from Geneva. He was the second heir to the throne to die outside the country in less than a year.

A burial ceremony was set for the holy city of Mecca, where the 88-year-old King Abdullah gathered with royal family members and international envoys. Abdullah has now outlived two appointed successors from among the elderly group of sons of Saudi's founding monarch, King Abdul-Aziz.

Health issues increasingly preoccupy the ruling inner circle in Saudi Arabia and show the vivid contrast between a leadership born at the dawn of Saudi's oil-rich age and the current population heavily weighted toward youth ? with more than half under 25 years old.

Saudi authorities have led the efforts in the Western-allied Gulf to counter Arab Spring-inspired calls for reforms, using a combination of crackdowns, intimidation and lavish spending to offer state jobs and handouts. Gulf officials have proposed closer cooperation on security matters, including monitoring social media.

The 78-year-old Nayef, the country's interior minister, was considered wary of even the modest changes brought by King Abdullah, including pledges to allow women to vote and run in the next municipal elections in 2015. Women activists had planned Sunday to mark the anniversary of a campaign to challenge the ultraconservative kingdom's ban on female driving, but they postponed the protests because of the official mourning period for Nayef.

The leading figure as the next heir to the throne, 76-year-old Defense Minister Prince Salman, also is not viewed as a dynamic reformer willing to confront the behind-the-scenes power center in Saudi Arabia ? the Islamic religious establishment that gives the monarchy its legitimacy to rule.

Later this week, a special council of royal family members is expected to convene to select the next crown prince of OPEC's top oil producer. The wider succession shake-up also will be closely watched.

It opens the possibility that a member of the so-called "third generation" ? the thousands of younger descendants of King Abdul-Aziz ? could move into positions traditionally considered in line for the throne.

In 2010, Salman had spinal surgery and has suffered at least one stroke, leaving him with limited movement in his left arm, said Simon Henderson, a Saudi affairs expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

The Saudi leadership keeps a tight lid on health-related issues. The cause of the crown prince's death in Geneva was not disclosed.

Nayef left the country in late May for what was described as a "personal vacation" that would include undisclosed medical tests. Earlier this year, he was treated at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, but no details have been officially disclosed.

Nayef's predecessor, Prince Sultan, 80, died in October in New York after an unspecified illness.

As interior minister since 1975, Nayef was in charge of internal security forces. He built up his power in the kingdom though his fierce crackdown against al-Qaida after the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S. and a broader campaign to prevent the growth of Islamic militancy among Saudis.

The 9/11 attacks at first strained ties between the two allies, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. For months, the kingdom refused to acknowledge that any of its citizens were involved in the suicide airline bombings. Nayef finally became the first Saudi official to publicly confirm that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis. That came in a February, 2002 interview with The Associated Press.

Nayef took a leading role in combatting the al-Qaida branch in Yemen as well. In 2009, al-Qaida militants tried to assassinate his son, Prince Muhammad, who is deputy interior minister and commander of counterterrorism operations. A suicide bomber posing as a repentant militant blew himself up in the same room as the prince but failed to kill him.
