Touchless Gesturing Brings New Innovation to Electronic Product ...

Human-machine interaction has evolved significantly over the past decade through enhancements in user interfaces and smart design. Many of these changes have focused around touchscreen interfaces with high-precision, low-power capacitive touchscreens at the forefront particularly in the handset market.

Traditionally infrared proximity sensing systems have incorporated legacy photo-detectors and photo-interrupters, which trigger based on motion or interruption respectively. These proximity sensing solutions are used extensively in automatic doors and lavatory dispensing systems, but the applications have been limited due to the sensor size, power and configurability.

Evolution from single- to multi-LED systems

Single-LED driver proximity sensors have been used in touchscreen handsets for many years and represent the highest-volume proximity sensor market, but their use has not been without issues.

Why does a seemingly simple proximity sensing system malfunction so frequently? The answer lies in the sensor design and configurability as well as the mechanical guidelines that accompany them. Many infrared proximity sensors are just that: dumb sensors that output raw data based on the signals received.

The latest generation of proximity sensors, such as Silicon Labs? Si114x family, addresses the shortcomings associated with poor proximity sensor operation. The advanced architecture of the Si114x sensors, for example, features multiple high sensitivity photodiodes coupled with a high-precision analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to enable measurements with the infrared LED on for a fraction of the time of other less advanced sensor offerings.

Faster measurements also have the benefit of reducing overall system power. The infrared LED is the biggest contributor to a proximity system?s power budget. Minimizing the time that the LED needs to remain reduces the overall system power consumption. With 15 dynamically adjustable LED drive settings, the LED drive strength can be adjusted based on the ambient infrared conditions, thereby saving power and leading to a more energy-efficient design.

Triple the LEDs, triple the innovation

While single-LED proximity systems are driving today?s market, the future is geared toward multi-LED proximity sensor systems enabling unique innovations in user interfaces. Two-LED infrared systems enable slide and select gestures for use in applications such as page turning in e-books, volume selection in home audio equipment, or scrolling in tablet PCs.

Touchless benefits: health, safety and convenience

A valid challenge to touchless interfaces is why they should be implemented at all. Why do away with tactile buttons and touchscreens if they work? Infrared systems are not going to replace existing systems, but instead they are going to augment the user experience. Increased integration and miniaturization are changing the way customers use electronics products.

Coffee shops, restaurants, gyms, bus stops, plane terminals and even lavatories are fair usage environments for this new generation of embedded electronics. In such diverse operating environments, users? hands are sometimes occupied, dirty, sweaty or covered in food ? all conditions not conducive to touchscreen operation.

Being able to control a device without having to look at it has additional benefits. For example, a touchless interface can allow an automobile driver to safely start/end a call or adjust volume with the touchless swipe of a hand without having to navigate through a complicated instrument cluster to find control buttons. Not all devices have or need complex graphical displays with touchscreens either, and for such devices a touchless interface can provide an innovative and differentiated approach for operation.

I read what would be an amusing, if it wasn?t so true, article written by Arizona Realtor Paul Pastore.? Times are tough for many home sellers, but the thoughts expressed about pricing and staging, while tongue in cheek, are spot on. ?The entire article is below.

?Home staging is not a substitute for proper pricing. ?It is only one leg of the ?home selling stool?.

Pricing, staging, and marketing all must be correct for a property to sell.

This week I viewed a property owned by a seller who thought he could fool ?all of the?people all of the time? with home staging.? He hired a local expert and a stager from California to ?cutify? his property.? ?The seller felt he could overprice the house by 50k after spending a few grand on staging cosmetics.

The seller purchased the property about a year ago for 390k & rolled his costs into a VA loan. ?His balance is around 400k.? The current market value is 375k. After costs he is about 50k under water.? He could short sale?the house, bring cash to closing, or ?doll it up? and ask 425k in an effort to break even.? He foolishly chose the latter strategy.

A sage once said that you can put lipstick on a pig, but you still have a pig.? An agent can stage an overpriced home, hold open houses every day, give out free hotdogs on the weekends, dress up in a clown suit and spin a sign on the nearest corner, have the Boy Scouts hand out flyers, have the 13 dogs that set the Guinness book of records jumping rope for the neighbors, have the Blue Angels do a fly-over, use the property for a charity Christmas boutique, offer a free petting zoo in the back yard, free car washes in the front yard by scantily clad cheerleaders, and have the home featured at half-time on Monday night football.

If the home is overpriced it still will not sell.

Home staging is to selling as red robes are to Catholic cardinals.? They both look great.

Few people buy a book based on its dust jacket.? Few home buyers overlook relevant comps because the home looks great and smells like vanilla extract.?

Fantasy Sports Fix: All the Fantasy Sports Coverage You Can ...

Scripps-led study finds overfishing of spawning areas, environmental conditions behind collapse of 2 bass species

The two most important recreational fisheries off Southern California have collapsed, according to a new study led by a researcher from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

Scripps postdoctoral researcher Brad Erisman and his colleagues examined the health of regional populations of barred sand bass and kelp bass-staple catches of Southern California's recreational fishing fleet-by combining information from fishing records and other data on regional fish populations. Stocks of both species have collapsed due to a combination of overfishing of their breeding areas and changes in oceanographic conditions, the researchers found.

As they describe in the most recent edition of the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, the researchers say the total amount, or biomass, of each bass species decreased 90 percent since 1980. Yet fisheries catch rates have remained stable for a number of years, even as overall population sizes dropped drastically. This is due, the authors say, to a phenomenon known as "hyperstability" in which fishing targets spawning areas at which large numbers of fish congregate, leading to a misleading high catch rate and masking a decline in the overall population.

"The problem is when fish are aggregating in these huge masses, fishermen can still catch a lot each trip, so everything looks fine-but in reality the true population is declining," said Erisman, a member of the Scripps Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation. "So as the true abundance is declining, the fisheries data used to assess the health of the fisheries are not showing that and give no indication of a collapse-this is referred to as 'the illusion of plenty.'"

Erisman says the cod fishery that collapsed in the North Atlantic Ocean is the world's most famous example of fisheries data masking an impending collapse, but other fish stocks in regions where fish congregate to spawn are declining as well.

In order to grasp a clear picture of the true health of the barred sand bass and kelp bass in Southern California, Erisman and his colleagues looked outside fisheries data. They tapped into fish population numbers tracked by power plant generating stations, which are required to log fish entrapments as part of their water cooling systems, and underwater visual censuses conducted by Occidental College since 1974.

The authors acknowledge that both bass species began declining in the early 1980s, a drop other studies have directly linked with a climatic shift in regional water temperatures. But they say fishing impacts exacerbated the declines.

"The combined evidence from this study indicates that persistent overfishing of seasonal spawning aggregations by recreational fisheries brought about the collapse of barred sand bass and kelp bass stocks in Southern California," the authors write in their paper.

"The relationship between catch rate and stock abundance suggests there is an urgent need to incorporate fisheries-independent monitoring to create something sustainable and monitor the fisheries effectively," said Erisman. "While fisheries monitoring remains a key part of management, it is clear that such data alone do not provide an accurate assessment of stock condition."
