Landon Collins was the only one smiling when he made the biggest announcement of the night.
The five-star recruit from New Orleans made his commitment to Alabama live on ESPN -- and surrounded by unhappy family members.
Collins chose the Crimson Tide over LSU during the Under Armour All-America High School Football Game in an unpopular move.
The icy reaction was punctuated by his mother sitting to his left.
?I feel that LSU is a better place for him,? April Justin said. ?LSU Tigers, No. 1. Go Tigers.?
Asked for a reaction, Collins was brief.
?I don?t know what to say about it,? he said.
Collins was the second big-name prospect to commit to the Tide during the all-star game.
Dual-threat playmaker Cyrus Jones of Baltimore picked Alabama over Auburn and a long list of other top programs.
?All I have to say is two words: Roll Tide,? Jones said as he reached for the Alabama hat.
Sticking to story
Marquis Maze didn?t hesitate when he said it the first time.
He was equally assertive when standing by his story about the controversial punt he didn?t field in the fourth quarter of the Nov. 5 loss to LSU.
?I?m sure it hit the wire,? Maze said Thursday morning. ?But I think I still could have caught it.
Not everyone agrees with Maze?s version.
P.J. Bennett, owner of ActionCam, said there was no way Brad Wing?s punt touched any of their equipment on that chilly November night.
CBS officials said the same after Maze said he didn?t field the crucial punt because the ball struck the camera?s guide wires.
Other factors were in play, Maze said Thursday before Alabama?s rematch with LSU in Monday?s BCS title game.
?My ankle didn?t let me get it,? he said. ?It?s just something I have to focus on and do better the second time around.?
Media blackout explained
The meeting of AJ McCarron and the horde of reporters Thursday wasn?t an every-day occurrence.
It was actually the fourth such assembly since the third-year sophomore quietly won the quarterback job over Phillip Sims.
Saban said his passer?s unavailability was on him, but McCarron said he never fought the decision.
?Coach wanted me to go under the radar this year,? McCarron said. ?? I don?t like to be around the camera light and all that a whole lot, but it was both of our decisions.?
McCarron, who was comfortable and insightful in front of the large media gathering, spoke after wins at Penn State, Florida, and Auburn before Thursday. He?ll be available again today during the full team?s hour-long media day in the Superdome.
