ADD And Coexisting Conditions ? Why Is It So Complicated?

This article has been viewed 5 times.

ADD is frequently accompanied by a coexisting condition. On the other hand, frequently ADD and these other conditions have like symptoms and, therefore, are easily misdiagnosed. Obviously, this creates multiple problems as these ailments, when individual, must be treated differently. An incorrect diagnosis will lead to unaffective treatment. As coexisting conditions, these are especially of concern, for they raise the symptoms of many of the symptoms of ADD, as well as the negative impact on those that suffer because them.

One such syndrome is Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder. Children with this disorder tend to be quite aggressive and defiant. They usually lose their tempers really quickly and challenge authority figures. This is the biggest most simple diagnosable behaviors, as teachers and parents become alert of this behavior fast and seek out treatment almost immediately. This specific disorder is typical in children that are the hyperactive/impulsive type of ADD and occurs in 35% of children with ADD. This coexisting condition makes it much more likely that these sufferers will get in real legal difficulty as they age due to their authoritative defiance.

Alot of children that have ADD in addition suffer from mood disorders and/or depression. The complication associated with this prexisting condition is the raised likelihood of suicide common during teen years. 18% of ADD children are also afflicted from some type of mood disorder, and it?s highly likely to occur with the inattentive type of ADD. This is generally not as easily diagnosed as compared to other conditions. Children with mood disorders as a prexisting condition must be treated with different medication than typical ADD treatment; therefore, such therapy may be more difficult.

Learning Disabilities are too conditions common with children that have ADD. While ADD, in itself, is not a learning disability, it can make it very hard for children to perform good in school. If combined with a learning disability, it makes it significantly more challenging for children to understand academic concepts and utilize such knowledge.

Most of the time, coexisting conditions make treatment more difficult and the side effects of both disorders more severe. The typical signs and symptoms of ADD are hard enough to deal with, but with more intense severity, it oftentimes makes side effects deadly or incredibly negatively life changing.

In conclusion, it is critical that, when diagnosing ADHD, that all due caution is excercised in making sure the alternatives are examined when developing a treatment protocol. Treating the incorrect disease is never an acceptable course of action. The appropriate treatment for the correct ailment is the exclusive way to limit and, possibly, eliminate, the symtoms.

EAST LANSING, Mich. For the human brain, learning a new task when rules change can be a surprisingly difficult process marred by repeated mistakes, according to a new study by Michigan State University psychology researchers.

Imagine traveling to Ireland and suddenly having to drive on the left side of the road. The brain, trained for right-side driving, becomes overburdened trying to suppress the old rules while simultaneously focusing on the new rules, said Hans Schroder, primary researcher on the study.

"There's so much conflict in your brain," said Schroder, "that when you make a mistake like forgetting to turn on your blinker you don't even realize it and make the same mistake again. What you learned initially is hard to overcome when rules change."

The study, in the research journal Cognitive, Affective & Behavioral Neuroscience, is one of the first to show how the brain responds to mistakes that occur after rules change.

Study participants were given a computer task that involved recognizing the middle letter in strings such as "NNMNN" or "MMNMM." If "M" was in the middle, they were to press the left button; if "N" was in the middle, they were to press the right. After 50 trials, the rules were reversed so the participants had to press the right button if "M" was in the middle and the left if "N" was in the middle.

Participants made more repeated errors when the rules were reversed, meaning they weren't learning from their mistakes. In addition, a cap measuring brain activity showed they were less aware of their errors. When participants did respond correctly after the rules changed, their brain activity showed they had to work harder than when they were given the first set of rules.

"We expected they were going to get better at the task over time," said Schroder, a graduate student in MSU's Department of Psychology. "But after the rules changed they were slower and less accurate throughout the task and couldn't seem to get the hang of it."

Continually making these mistakes in the work environment can lead to frustration, exhaustion and even anxiety and depression, said Jason Moser, assistant professor of psychology and director of MSU's Clinical Psychophysiology Lab.

"These findings and our past research suggest that when you have multiple things to juggle in your mind essentially, when you are multitasking you are more likely to mess up," Moser said. "It takes effort and practice for you to be more aware of the mistakes you are missing and stay focused."

In addition to Schroder and Moser, co-researchers include Erik Altmann, associate professor of psychology, and master's student Tim Moran.

Hosts beat Argentina amid Falklands row

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain beat Argentina 4-1 on Monday in a physical but fair match between two teams who said they blocked out any rivalry stemming from a dispute between the nations over a tiny south Atlantic archipelago 30 years ago.

Despite several tough tackles, some strong words, and a total of five time suspensions between two and 10 minutes, not unusual in hockey, it remained a fair match.

Athletes playing in front of roaring British spectators, who chanted "Rule Britannia", afterwards glossed over the heightened media attention due to the politics of the game.

"We were just focusing on our sport and we are not thinking about the situation. It's for another moment, not for now," said Argentina's Rodrigo Vila after the match.

Diplomatic relations between the two nations have soured this year, the 30th anniversary of their brief war over the British-run Falkland Islands, with Buenos Aires pushing hard to have the islands recognized as Argentine territory.

Britain has refused to back down, arguing that the destiny of the islands, called Las Malvinas in Argentina, should be decided by their 3,000 inhabitants.

Those bitter territorial tensions have spilled over into the world of sport, with media on both sides of the ocean hamming up the significance of battles on the field of play.

Soccer fans in England, part of Britain, still bear a grudge over Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" goal - when he punched the ball into the net - which helped Argentina put an end to England's World Cup dreams in 1986, just four years after the Falklands war.

TELEVISION ADVERTISEMENT

Argentina then touched a nerve in May with a state-supported television advertisement showing a hockey player training in the Falklands. The video ended with the voiceover: "To compete on English soil, we are training on Argentine soil."

Asked about the video, Argentina's coach Pablo Lombi said: "It is a long time ago now... Today (was) just a hockey game."

Although the player featured in the advertisement, Fernando Zylberberg, did not make Argentina's Olympic hockey squads, Britain accused Argentina of abusing the Games for political purposes.

British Prime Minister David Cameron stirred things up in June warning Argentina that Britain stood "ready and willing to stand up for the Falkland Islanders at any time".

In the joint news conference after the games, the two team's captains, sitting next to each other, were chatting while one of the coaches answered a question and British coach Jason Lee said he had given his team a different source of motivation.

"I would hope that their biggest motivation was that if they didn't play well or they didn't win, I was going to rip their heads off," he told reporters.

"It was all right that there was some needle in the game. But that's because it's the Olympic Games. I think if you didn't see that in the game, then we didn't do well," agreed British skipper Barry Middleton, who scored the first two of his side's goals.

His team mate Dan Fox then scored his first international goal, followed by a penalty corner from Richard Smith, before the world number fours gave Argentina, ranked ninth, a chance to score with 15 minutes to go.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner will not attend the Games and media have reported her telling the country's 142 Olympic athletes at their send-off not to stage any Falklands protests in London.

The Argentine national Olympic Committee quickly distanced itself from the video in May.

Romney courts donors, raises cash in Israel

(AP) ? Having publicly pledged a "solemn duty and moral imperative" to protect Israel, Mitt Romney told Jewish donors Monday that their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the nearby Palestinians.

"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who breakfasted around a U-shaped table at the luxurious King David Hotel.

The economic disparity between the Israelis and the Palestinians is actually much greater. Israel had a per capita gross domestic product of about $31,000 in 2011, while the West Bank and Gaza had a per capita GDP of just over $1,500, according to the World Bank.

Romney, seated next to billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson at the head of the table, said he had read books and relied on his own business experience to understand why the difference is so great.

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence."

The reaction of Palestinian leaders was quick and strong.

"What is this man doing here? Yesterday, he destroyed negotiations by saying Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and today he is saying Israeli culture is more advanced than Palestinian culture. Isn't this racism? Israelis and Palestinians have a conflict, but they are people, they are equal, it is not a better culture or advanced culture," said Saeb Erekat, a top Palestinian official.

"It's Israeli occupiers and Palestinians under occupation, and that's why Palestinians cannot realize their potential," he said.

The breakfast with top donors ? including Adelson, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and hedge fund manager Paul Singer ? concluded Romney's visit to Israel, the second leg of a three-nation overseas tour designed to bolster the his foreign policy credentials.

Standing on Israeli soil for the first time as the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has promised never to "look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The status of Jerusalem is a critical issue in peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

During his visit to Israel, Romney did not meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas or visit the West Bank. He held a brief meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Romney's campaign says his trip abroad, which began in England last week, is aimed at improving the former Massachusetts governor's foreign policy experience through a series of meetings with foreign leaders. The candidate has largely avoided direct criticism of U.S. President Barack Obama while on foreign soil.

The Jerusalem fundraiser, however, was a political event that raised more than $1 million for Romney's campaign. It marks at least the second finance event during his tour. The first, in London, attracted about 250 people to a $2,500 per person fundraiser.

Both presidential candidates have aggressively courted American donors living abroad, a practice that is legal and has been used for decades.

Several donors were among those gathered in Jerusalem for Romney's speech on Sunday.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Adelson, the American businessman who has promised to donate more than $100 million to help defeat Obama.

Adelson was among a several donors who flew to Israel for a day of sightseeing with Romney in addition to private meetings with top Israeli officials.

A group of donors also met with a top aide to President Benjamin Netanyahu, one donor said on the condition of anonymity to discuss private meetings.

Romney met with Netanyahu and other leaders before the speech. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from securing nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

Romney flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, Obama visited Israel as a presidential candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel.

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built," he said at the time.

Madagascar deports ousted leader's spouse to Thailand

The wife of Madagascar's ousted leader Marc Ravalomanana was deported and put on a flight to Thailand Friday, hours after she landed at the island nation's capital, her son said.

"They pushed my mum out of the country," Tojo Ravalomanana told AFP.

Her husband's lawyer, Hanitra Razafimanantsoa, said: "They sent her to Bangkok. She called from the plane. She doesn't have a visa or any money."

The head of Ravalomanana's political movement, Mamy Rakotoarivelo, earlier told AFP that she had been detained on arrival but was later released at the order of Prime Minister Omer Beriziky.

The former president and his wife have repeatedly tried and failed to enter the country. Their son Tojo has been living on the island.

Since his ouster in 2009, Ravalomanana has been living in exile in South Africa.

His wife attempted to return following this week's talks between Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina, the country's current ruler who took power with army backing three years ago.

But Rajoelina's office described the attempt by Ravalomanana's wife to return, as "provocative" and in "flagrant violation of the resolutions taken at the face-to-face talks held in Seychelles."

"At a time when the people and the country are seeking ways towards peace and quiet, this irresponsible and provocative move by Marc Ravalomonana, could jeopardise the continuation of the next round of negotiations," said a statement from Rajoelina's office.

The first direct talks between the two failed to agree on conditions for Ravalomanana's eventual return, but his wife's arrival was seen as a sign of progress in easing the deadlock.

Agreeing on the terms of his return is one of the major hurdles in guiding Madagascar towards elections.

The two rivals are expected to meet again within three weeks, before the next summit of the Southern African Development Community, which is mediating in the crisis.

Gov't: says only 1 in 4 have HIV under control

(AP) ? New government data shows only a quarter of Americans with the AIDS virus have the infection under control. Young people and blacks are least likely to get effective care.

That's slightly lower than previous estimates, and means more than 800,000 people aren't benefiting from life-saving drugs that also would lower their level of infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that's because nearly 20 percent don't know they're infected, and only two-thirds who are diagnosed are linked to a doctor. It says poverty and lack of insurance are the main barriers.

Just 15 percent of 25- to 34-year-olds have gotten the virus to low levels, less than half the rate of 50-somethings. And 1 in 5 African-Americans had the virus suppressed, compared with 30 percent of whites.

Some People Think Mountain Lion Is Steve Jobs?Wait, WHAT? [Apple]

The current rumor now ramping through the internet is so dumb, so painfully stupid that Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave: apparently, tons of irreversible imbeciles in Facebook and Twitter are saying that Apple's Mountain Lion image is based on the Jobs' biography cover picture, as an homage to Apple's former leader. Multiple Sclerosis Research: Research: MS and cancer risks in women

Epub: Hemminki et al. Effect of autoimmune diseases on risk and survival in female cancers. Gynecol Oncol. 2012 Jul 18.

OBJECTIVES: People with autoimmune (AI) diseases are diagnosed with increased frequencies of some cancers, which may depend on the underlying dysregulation of the immune system or treatment. Data on female cancers are limited.

METHODS: The investihgators analyzed systematically risk and survival of female cancers of the breast, uterus, ovary and other genital organs in close to 200,000 patients diagnosed with any of 33 different AI diseases. Standardized incidence ratios (SIR) for risk and hazard ratios (HRs) for survival were calculated for subsequent incident cancers or cancer deaths up to year 2008.

RESULTS: For all breast cancer after any AI diseases, the SIR was 0.94; SIRs were modestly increased after two AI diseases and decreased after nine AI diseases, including Sjogren syndrome (0.46). For cervical cancer, the risk was increased after discoid lupus erythematosus (3.34) and systemic sclerosis (2.43). The HR was 2.12 in chronic rheumatic heart disease patients. The overall SIR for endometrial cancer was 0.85, with low SIR in ankylosing spondylitis (0.37); the HR was 4.05 for Sjogren syndrome. The SIR for ovarian cancer was increased for polymyositis/dermatomyositis (3.26) while the HR was increased for multiple sclerosis (2.43). The overall SIR for other genital cancers was increased to 1.54 and a very high risk of 35.88 was observed in localized scleroderma.

CONCLUSIONS: Breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers were decreased after all AI diseases and most significant changes after individual AI diseases were towards lower risks. Probably treatment related factors explain the findings. For cervical and other genital cancers all significant changes were increased risks.

Senate OKs Dem tax-cut bill in showdown with GOP

In this July 24, 2012, photo, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, talks to reporters following a closed-door political strategy session at the Capitol in Washington. The Senate is bracing for a tax-cut showdown that is all about Democrats and Republicans showing voters their differences over taxing the well-off while accusing each other of threatening to shove the government over a fiscal cliff. (AP) ? Democrats pushed a yearlong extension of tax cuts for all but the highest-earning Americans through the Senate on Wednesday, giving President Barack Obama and his party a significant political victory on a measure that is fated to go no further in Congress.

Senators approved the Democratic bill by a near party-line 51-48 vote, with Vice President Joe Biden presiding over the chamber in case his vote was needed to break a tie. Minutes earlier, lawmakers voted 54-45 to kill a rival Republican package that would have included the best-off in the tax reductions.

The $250 billion Democratic measure would extend tax cuts in 2013 for millions of Americans that otherwise would expire in January. But it would deny those reductions to the earnings of individuals exceeding $200,000 yearly and of couples surpassing $250,000.

With control of the White House and Congress at stake in elections less than four months off, passage of the Democratic bill aligned the Senate with Obama's tax-cutting vision. Obama has made tax fairness ? which includes tax increases on the rich ? an overarching theme of his re-election campaign, and rejection of the measure would have been an embarrassment for the president and Senate Democrats.

The vote also served as a counterpoint to the GOP-run House, which next week will approve tax cuts nearly identical to the $405 billion Republican plan the Senate rejected Wednesday. And it lets Democrats argue that only the GOP stands in the way of tax cuts for millions of Americans.

"With the Senate's vote, the House Republicans are now the only people left in Washington holding hostage the middle-class tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans and nearly every small business owner," Obama said in a written statement after the vote.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, restated his plan for next week's vote, citing the Democratic measure's tax boosts on higher earners. Republicans say those increases sap money from business owners who would otherwise create jobs, which Democrats say is overblown.

"The House will vote next week to stop that tax hike, and until the Senate does the same, the threat to our economy remains," Boehner said in a written statement.

Congress' nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation has said just 3.5 percent of taxpayers with business income filing individual returns would be exposed to higher taxes next year under the Democratic bill. But such taxpayers account for 53 percent of reported business income on those returns.

Wednesday's Senate vote also highlighted how both parties see the tax issue as a winning one: Democrats because they think it makes the GOP look like defenders of the rich, Republicans because they think it shows Democrats don't care about businesses.

It took just minutes for Democratic Senate campaign officials to send emails saying that Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., was "holding tax relief for the middle-class hostage by demanding more millionaire tax breaks." GOP Senate campaign operatives sent out similar emails, with one saying Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., had voted to "raise taxes on Montana farmers, ranchers & small business owners."

Tester and Heller are in tight re-election contests this November.

The two parties have been dueling over taxes all year. Few expect any real progress until after the November elections on preventing the tax cuts or averting deep budget cuts in January triggered by the failure of lawmakers to compromise last year on debt reduction.

In Wednesday's vote, two senators who will retire next year ? Jim Webb, D-Va., and Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent who usually votes with Democrats ? were that party's only defectors on final passage.

Opposing the GOP measure were Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., who faces a tough re-election fight in November, and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., who could have a tight re-election in 2014, voted for both the Republican and Democratic plans.

"If the wealthiest people in America can't get a tax break, the Senate Republicans say, 'No one gets a tax break,'" Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, Senate Democrats' No. 2 leader, said after the roll calls. "That was what these two votes tell us."

Republicans said the measure was all about Democratic posturing for the upcoming elections.

"Thank goodness it's not going anywhere because it would be bad for the economy, the single worst thing we could do to the country," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said.

Republicans were hoping that several Democrats seeking re-election would hurt their candidacies by having backed the Democratic package. The bill would dramatically boost the estate tax, which would be widely unpopular in farming, ranching and high cost-of-living states, and increase levies on dividends and capital gains, which are relied on by many elderly people.

"That's what today's votes are all about," McConnell said in a thinly veiled warning to Democrats. "Showing the people who sent us here where we stand."

Illustrating the potential high-voltage political impact of the vote, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who is in a tight re-election race, announced she had introduced a bill preventing the estate tax from rising next year, and Tester co-sponsored it. She issued a news release to that effect just minutes after voting for the Democratic bill, which would let estate taxes go much higher in 2013.

Under the Democratic measure, individuals earning over $200,000 and couples making at least $250,000 would see their top rates on those earnings rise from 33 percent and 35 percent today to 36 percent and 39.6 percent in January.

That increase would affect 2.5 million households, or 2 percent of all 140.5 million tax returns, according to 2009 Internal Revenue Service statistics.

The White House said that if the tax cuts were not continued, middle class families would face average tax increases next year of $1,600. It also said that the GOP bill would grant tax reductions averaging $160,000 to households where income exceeds $1 million annually.

The Democratic bill would also boost the top tax rate paid by people who inherit estates to 55 percent, exempting the first $1 million in an estate's value. The GOP measure would maintain today's 35 percent top rate and would not tax the first $5.12 million of an estate's value.

In fresh figures released this week by Republicans, Congress' nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation estimated that the Democratic provision would affect 55,200 estates next year, compared with 3,600 who would face estate taxes under the GOP plan.

Democrats would impose top tax rates next year of 20 percent on dividends and capital gains, two sources of income enjoyed disproportionately by the wealthy. The GOP top rate would be 15 percent.

The GOP bill ignores some tax credits for low- and middle-income families that Democrats want to extend for college costs; for some low-income couples and large working families; and for families with children.

All were part of Obama's economic 2009 stimulus bill. Democrats say those tax breaks were meant to be permanent but Republicans say they were only a short-term response to the recession.
