Isaac, drought create unexpected risks in U.S. supply chain | Risks ...

This year?s drought conditions have caused some issues with local supply chains in the United States, especially along the Mississippi River corridor where low river levels have created problems for cargo ships.

In a recent interview with A.M. Best Company?s Best Day, Linda Conrad, director of strategic business risk for Zurich Global Corporate, explained how both drought conditions and Hurricane Isaac have impacted supply chain and business continuity in the U.S.

Conrad?s full interview with Best Day is available here.

In the interview, Conrad notes the importance of businesses having a solid, broad-based enterprise risk management/business continuity?program. Further, she said an in All-Risks insurance policy is a policy that should provide coverage outside of a named event.

Interesting fact ? nearly 40% of all companies that suffer a supply chain disruption go out of business.?

More information around supply chain, disaster management and business continuity can be found at Zurich?s Supply Chain Risk Insights.

Has your company adopted a broad ERM strategy and does it include steps to take if a supply chain disruption occurs? Have you thought about how your supply chain in the U.S. can be impacted by Isaac?

Japan court to rule on Apple-Samsung patent brawl

A Japanese court on Friday will issue a ruling in a bitter patent dispute between Apple and its South Korean rival Samsung, the latest case in a global war between the two technology giants.

The Tokyo District Court was expected to rule on Apple's claim that Samsung illegally copied technology from its iconic iPhone and iPad tablet for some of its Galaxy smartphones and the Galaxy Tab.

Samsung has steadfastly denied those claims in a string of similar cases filed across the globe.

The Tokyo ruling comes a week after the iPhone maker won more than $1.0 billion in a massive US court victory over Samsung with jurors finding that the South Korean firm had "willfully" infringed on Apple's patents.

Jurors rejected the South Korean electronics firm's patent theft counterclaims against Apple.

The high-profile verdict affects patents on a range of Samsung products including some of its popular smartphones and its Galaxy 10 tablet?devices alleged to have been copied from the iPhone and iPad.

Also last week, a court in Seoul ruled the pair had both swiped each other's technology and awarded damages to both technology giants.

It also imposed a partial ban on product sales in South Korea of Apple's iPhone 4 and iPad 2, as well as Samsung's Galaxy S and Galaxy S II among other products.

"If the (Japanese) verdict rules that Samsung violated patent rights, it would have a significant impact on Samsung," said Michiru Takahashi, a patent lawyer at Jones Day in Tokyo.

"But if the verdict does not recognise a violation... Samsung will regain momentum," she added.

The patent cases could shake up the sizzling market for mobile devices in which Apple has been losing ground to rivals like Samsung that use the Android operating system developed by Google.

A survey by research firm IDC showed Samsung shipped 50.2 million smartphones globally in the April-June period, while Apple sold 26 million iPhones. IDC said Samsung held 32.6 percent of the market to 16.9 percent for Apple.

Writer breaks down floppy drive history in detail, recalls the good sectors and the bad

HP details history of the floppy drive, recalls the good sectors and the bad

There's been a lot of nostalgia circulating around the PC world in the past year, but there's only one element of early home computing history that everyone shares in common: the floppy drive. A guest writer posting at HP's Input Output blog, Steve Vaughan-Nichols, is acknowledging our shared sentimentality with a rare retrospective of those skinny magnetic disks from their beginning to their (effective) end. Many of us are familiar with the floppies that fed our Amigas, early Macs and IBM PCs; Vaughan-Nichols goes beyond that to address the frustrations that led to the first 8-inch floppy at IBM in 1967, the esoteric reasons behind the 5.25-inch size and other tidbits that might normally escape our memory. Don't be sad knowing that the floppy's story ends with a whimper, rather than a bang. Instead, be glad for the look back at a technology that arguably greased the wheels of the PC era, even if it sometimes led to getting more disks than you could ever use. Sorry about that.

With West Nile On The Rise, We Answer Your Questions

A Beechcraft airplane sprays insecticide over Dallas early Monday morning to curb the spread of West Nile virus.

This year is on track to be the worst ever for West Nile virus in the United States. Here are the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • 1,590 reported cases, nearly 500 more than a week ago for a rise of 44 percent.
  • 889 cases, or 56 percent, involve severe neurological disease.
  • 66 deaths, compared to 41 last week.

Every state except Alaska and Hawaii has reported West Nile virus in people, birds or mosquitoes. "We expect the number of cases will rise through October," says Dr. Lyle Petersen, director of the CDC's division of vector-borne infections.

In Texas, the worst-hit state, cases jumped by nearly 200 over the past week and deaths reached 31, up 10 from last week. "As I look at the data, I'm not convinced we have peaked," Texas health commissioner Dr, David Lakey told reporters on a CDC conference call Wednesday.

As the reported numbers have mounted, many NPR listeners emailed us with questions about West Nile. We put them to to Dr. Erin Staples, a medical epidemiologist in CDC's arbovirus diseases branch, and Dr. Robert Haley of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Haley wrote a commentary on the situation in the current JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Here's a selection of the most frequently asked questions and answers from them and other sources.

?

Q: Where did West Nile virus come from? And how did it get into the United States?

A: It was discovered in the West Nile District of Uganda in 1937, and later found in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

The West Nile virus now found across the continental United States, Canada, Central America and the Caribbean is an Israeli strain introduced into New York City in 1999. It was likely carried by an infected stowaway mosquito that arrived by plane or cargo ship. Some think an off-course bird might have carried the virus to North America, but Haley thinks this is unlikely. "Bird infections last only a few days," he says, "and the bird would have been sick and unable to fly long distances."

Haley says WNV is related to mosquito-borne viruses that cause St. Louis encephalitis, dengue fever, yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis.

Q: Why is West Nile disease so bad this year? Is global warming a factor?

A: "That's a good and complicated question," Staples says. "It's not clear why we're seeing more West Nile Virus activity." One prominent theory is that an unusually mild winter last year allowed more WNV-infected mosquitoes to survive, giving the virus a head start when spring arrived.

Then there's the unusually hot weather many areas suffered this summer. Haley says the Culex pipens mosquito, the urban-dwelling primary carrier of WNV, "breeds a little differently than others. They like a hot, dry summer punctuated by a little rainfall here and there ? and a lot of stagnant water produced by humans."

Haley says this summer "was just right" from Culex's point of view ? especially in Dallas, which has been hardest hit by WNV of any US city. "We've had several very strategic rainfalls ? large thunderstorms that swept over Dallas," Haley says.

But Staples says it's too soon to attribute this year's unusual WNV activity to climate change. "Some of our largest years were 2002 and 2003, and more recent years have been low by comparison," the CDC epidemiologist says. "We see waxes and wanes, not a steady increase."

Q: Health officials in Texas and other areas are ordering aerial spraying of insecticides to kill mosquitoes, hoping that will quell outbreaks. But won't that kill beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies? And what's the risk for people?

A: The CDC and Environmental Protection Agency say there's virtually no risk to people from aerial spraying to kill mosquitoes, and very small risk to "good" insects or the environment.

The insecticides used for this purpose are pyrethrins, synthetic versions of a natural insecticide found in chrysanthemums. They have a good safety record. The insecticides excite mosquitoes and eventually paralyze the insects' breathing muscles.

These insecticides are used in very low concentrations for aerial spraying ? about a teaspoon for an area the size of a football field. This kind of spraying produces microscopic droplets about the size of a red blood cell. So nobody standing underneath gets more than a negligible exposure.

And most of the spray, Haley says, doesn't penetrate the tree canopies where Culex mosquitoes hang out.

Moreover, aerial spraying is done at night, when the mosquitoes are active but beneficial insects aren't. Pyrethrin insecticides break down quickly when exposed to sunlight and air, so there is environmental buildup isn't an issue.

One problem: Too much spraying can produce insecticide-resistant mosquitoes. So public health officials generally restrict spraying to a couple of applications within a two-week period. But that's been shown to squelch WNV outbreaks.

Texas health commissioner Lakey says officials there should know soon if spraying in Dallas County has eradicated WNV-infected mosquitoes. Because of a lag time in reporting human cases, it will take several weeks to know if spraying has been effective in stopping the outbreak there.

Q: How serious is WNV disease? Can people suffer long-term effects?

Four out of five people infected with WNV don't even know it. They have no symptoms. The rest experience an unpleasant flu-like illness marked by fever and chills, headaches, fatigue and pain in muscles and joints. Symptoms often last three to six days, but some people don't recover for weeks.

About 1 in 150 people infected with the virus develop infections of the brain (encephalitis) or surrounding tissue (meningitis). Those can cause severe headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion, convulsions, coma, tremors, muscle weakness and paralysis. Around 10 percent of people with WNV encephalitis die. Many with neurologic involvement require weeks of hospitalization and some are left with permanent effects, such as muscle weakness and paralysis.

In July Dr. Kristy Murray and her colleagues at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston published a report on 139 people who had recovered from WNV infection. Forty percent had chronic kidney disease. While some of these had kidney problems before their WNV infection, the Houston researchers think many developed kidney disease as a result of the virus.

Staples says the CDC is aware of the Houston report, but it's too small a study to determine if WNV causes long-term kidney disease. "It's definitely something that needs further study," she says.

Curiously, WNV disease was largely a milder disease before it arrived in North America 13 years ago. Staples says no one knows why so-called "neuroinvasive" disease is more common these days. Petersen of the CDC says there's no evidence so far that neuroinvasive disease has become more common since 1999.

Q: Is West Nile Virus a threat to my pet or livestock?

A: Among mammals, humans and horses are the only ones known to die of WNV infection ? almost always from the neurologic form of the disease. Staples says experiments with dogs showed they developed no symptoms at all, and cats had only mild symptoms. There is no evidence of animal-to-person transmission or animal-to-animal infection. The mosquito is always the bridge.

Dr. John Glisson of the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association says all birds are susceptible to WNV to some degree, but many species don't get sick from it. "Chickens can become infected but show no ill effects," he says. "It has never been a problem for the poultry industry."

Among wild birds, the corvids ? especially crows and blue jays ? are most likely to die from WNV. But Haley says robins are most important in amplifying the amount of virus in the environment because they have several broods in a season, and baby robins are especially vulnerable to the bites of infected mosquitoes.

Q: If I get infected with WNV, will I be immune from future infections?

A: Yes. Doctors think infection produces lifelong immunity. The CDC estimates about 3 million Americans have been infected with WNV, though most of them don't know it.

Q: Can I get tested to see if I'm immune?

A: There is a test, called an ELISA, for WNV antibodies. But the CDC doesn't encourage people to get it unless a doctor recommends it for a particular medical reason. The test can be prone to false positives. "It's best to assume that you're not immune unless you know you've had WNV," Staples says.

The best way to protect yourself is to avoid mosquito bites. That means using insect repellant, wearing long sleeves and pants when outside at dawn or dusk when mosquitoes are most likely to bite, and keeping window screens in good repair. The agency also stresses emptying any standing pools of water ? from bird baths, wading pools, tire swings or any other source ? to foil mosquito breeding.

Q: Since people become immune after infection, why isn't there a vaccine for WNV?

A: There is a vaccine ? actually four different marketed vaccines ? for horses. And there has been some research on a human WNV vaccine, including some successful early trials in humans. But the effort to develop a human vaccine has hit a wall.

"We're not currently aware of any ongoing studies to move a human WNV vaccine towards licensure," Staples says.

One big problem is how to test a candidate vaccine in large-enough numbers of human volunteers ? some of whom would get the real vaccine and others a placebo. "To do that we'd have to be able to predict where WNV will occur," Staples says.

And if a human vaccine were developed, it's not clear how it would be deployed. A 2006 CDC study concluded universal vaccination against WNV wouldn't be cost-effective. It's conceivable that a vaccine would be targeted to older individuals and those with particular risks from WNV infection, such as those with kidney disease or compromised immune systems. But that market might not be large enough to justify the costs of development.

The calculus could change, however, if WNV outbreaks continue to increase.

Teens held after 5-year-old found dead in trash can

By NBC News staff and wire reports

NIAGARA FALLS, New York -- Two teenagers charged in connection with the death of a five-year-old New York girl whose body was dumped in a trash can were expected to make their first court appearance since their arrests.

Five-year-old Isabella Tennant was found dead after going missing from her home in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Authorities said 16-year-old John Freeman and 18-year-old Tyler Best were scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning in Niagara Falls City Court. ?An autopsy of the body of Isabella Tennant was also scheduled.

The arrests came after Best went to police Monday morning and led them to a garbage can containing a trash bag holding Isabella's body. Best told them he had helped the younger teen dispose of the body after Freeman killed her, police said.

'Bare hands'
Isabella's family called police Monday morning to say she was missing from her great-grandmother's Niagara Falls home, where she'd been staying overnight.

?The great grandmother, Sharon Lascelle, said she went to bed just after 11:00 p.m. and Isabella was playing with" the 16-year-old, according to a press release issued to NBC station WGRZ by the Niagara Falls Police Department.

?At this time we believe Freeman killed Isabella with his bare hands (no weapons involved) and that Best was only involved after she was deceased and assisted with moving her remains,? it said.

Freeman "was described by family members of the victim as a ?close? and ?trusted? family friend. They also said it was also not uncommon for him to be in the home and around Isabella unsupervised. Best and Freeman are described as close friends,? it added.

Read more news from NBC station WGRZ

Police charged Freeman as an adult with second-degree murder. ?

Best is charged with tampering with evidence. Best and Freeman were in custody and couldn't be reached for comment.?

At a news conference Monday afternoon, Niagara Falls Chief Detective William Thompson said there were signs of injuries but no indication of sexual abuse.

"It's a terrible crime. It tears at your heart," Thompson said.

Of Best going to police, Thompson said, "I imagine it was his conscience."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Taking your business higher with Document Management System ...

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Caitlin Jones | Monday, 27 August 2012 01:26 | Word Count: 507

If you are one of those businessmen running a small enterprise, wondering how to take your business to greater heights, we?ll give you a start. Document Management System, also known as DMS, is a great way to save time by consolidating all your files and folders into a computer facilitated storage that will turn around your business more than you can imagine. Now if you are wondering how a computer based document management system can boost your business, let us start by giving you some wonderful benefits: ?? At the very outset, a DMS will enable you to get rid of all those folders, thereby clearing a lot of office space. Perhaps, even a whole room, if that?s the number of files and folders you stock.

?? With a DMS, all the time that you spend in flipping pages after pages of a file in order to find a particular document will be saved. With that additional time that you make for yourself, you can do more and more business dealings which you?ve always wanted to, but never could.

Using records management software, i.e. an alternative to a DMS, you can store all your data into a single software that has the capability to store your files, archive it for as long as you want, retrieve it for you when you enter search commands, and eventually destroy it when the time comes. This type of setting can benefit your company a lot by making sure that even if your employees are out of town, they can still work without having to worry about looking up for data in paper documents. All they will need is their laptop, and the records management which contains all your data.

When the documents you store require a lot of revision from time to time, it becomes very vital to keep a track of all the revisions that take place. With ordinary tools, it is not possible but with a document management version control, you can keep a check on what?s going on with multiple revisions. If the client calls you up for a piece of information on their new deal, you need to be sure that you open the latest revised document, and not the one that was revised a week or a month ago. With a document management version control, the task of upgrading a document becomes very simple.

As the clout of technology is growing, almost every businessman is adapting to changing technology in a lieu to improve and boost their business. Since saving space and time are two vital aspects of any business, they should be given prime importance. A new tool which can give you the advantage of time and money is an electronic document imaging software. It has the capability of storing all your documents in the form of PDF files, that you can access at any later point of time by just entering the keywords you had used to store that particular file. If you want to lead in this competitive race, we advise you go tech savvy!

Caitlin Jones writes on records management. She is associated with many renowned document management version control and electronic document imaging websites. She is an active member of many reputed social networks and works consistently to help people with his knowledge.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? The Value ...

Some go on to make enough to live on, some an especially cushty living and some make a genuine fortune. There are numerous investors who make trading their sole occupation. Others return to their old job, annoyed and scared of ever doing anything different and giving up on their hopes of the life they actually wish to live. Here's a story about a man?? What if you might leverage a powerful solid research of market factors and patterns, correctly envisioning the best stocks to buy? What if androids can do all of that for you? These are what automated stock market dealing robotic systems do best. What if you had a technique to tell which stocks are intending to make a slaughtering in the market? Spot the ?gainers? earlier without counting on brokers or sly insider information. These systems scan the market steadily for the best emerging stocks. Stocks are influenced daily by foreseeable information and arithmetic.

This suggests you quickly know which stocks are going to make a gain. You can purchase inexpensive early and sell higher later earning masses of bucks each day or thousands of bucks each week on your investment with the best stockmarket trading system. The advantages of an automatic share trading robotic system are giant. As the more well capable you are on the language then you'll get more successful. The best thing about the stock market trader software is the incontrovertible fact that they're programmed to recognise the trends and advise you of which stocks are probably going to be good to make an investment in. * There are new technologies out there now that will seriously improve the probability for successful stock market trading.

They also are comparatively cheap and easy to utilise. If you're think about making an investment in a stock market trader software then it'd be to your benefit to learn all you are able to about the various type and the good points and bad points of every one before purchasing one. This is effective as the market advances in patterns which repeat themselves often each 7 years typically. Some automated stock market trading systems particularly target penny stocks and shares when attempting to find trading prospects. This may be seen and shown by the undeniable fact that we are going into and out of recessions continually whether or not it's larger or smaller one or more times ten years. This is effective because penny stocks and shares are the least expensive, most uncertain and wildly changing investments to be found in the market as it is far easier to persuade their position and price with less trading activity. As an example, the 1st automated securities dealing system pick which was aimed at penny stocks and shares especially which I invested in was priced at $.18 a share.

Simple Way to Curb Financial Dishonesty Found

Many financial documents require a signature at the end to certify that all the information provided is true. This honor declaration doesn't always keep people honest. But what if it could? Scientists have discovered that having people sign at the beginning of the document rather than at the end may curb dishonesty.

Researchers looked at how the position of people's signatures affects their tendency to lie on a financial self-report, such as a tax return. Participants were much less likely to lie if they had to sign at the top of the document instead of at the bottom.

Essentially, signing before the opportunity to "cheat" makes morality salient when it's needed the most, researchers said.

"Our findings are very important for companies and policies," said study co-author Nina Mazar, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Toronto in Canada. "Even if you might see effects for only a few years, it can save quite some money."

Sign here

Dishonest self-reporting on financial forms comes at a great cost to society, Mazar notes. For instance, the IRS estimates that the amount of revenue unreported and unpaid in 2005 totaled approximately $345 billion. Other countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also suffer from dishonest reporting, Mazar said. [6 Odd Historical Tax Facts]

The issue is people have mental tricks to self-deceive. "We find ways to suppress what we have done, to reinterpret what we have done," Mazar told LiveScience. By the time the honor code comes into play, it's too little, too late. "You can sign because you've made yourself believe everything you've done is fine ? you've already had the opportunity to reinterpret your actions."

So Mazar and her colleagues wondered: Could positioning the signature up front make people more honest? They conducted several experiments to find out.

In two lab experiments, the team had participants complete math puzzles, in which they earned income for puzzles solved correctly. The participants later tossed their worksheets into a trash can. Then, on a tax form, they reported their income accrued from the puzzles they solved, with one group signing at the top and the other at the form's end.

The researchers used coded numbers to tie the tax forms to the worksheets they fished out of the trash, finding those who signed at the top were more honest about their earnings. In one experiment, for example, only 37 percent of the 30 people using the sign-at-top forms overstated their income from the puzzles, compared with 63 percent of the 30 sign-at-bottom participants.

Real-world use

The team then partnered with a U.S. automobile insurance company for a real-world experiment. They sent out more than 13,000 policy-review forms, which asked customers to report the current odometer mileage of their cars. Half of the customers received a modified form, where the honesty statement and signature line appeared up top. Comparing these readings with the company's latest records, they found that customers using the sign-at-top form reported driving their cars more than those with the standard sign-at-bottom form. The results suggest customers with the standard form were more willing to report lower mileages to reduce their insurance premiums.

Seeing the signature up front reminds people of their own moral standards, Mazar explained.

Jason Dana, a University of Pennsylvania psychologist who wasn't involved in the study, thinks the idea of moving the signature is "really cool and interesting." But he wonders if the effect seen has more to do with novelty than morality. "Slapping it at the top just makes me think, 'Whoa, something's up, they're serious,'" Dana told LiveScience. "What happens if all things are signed at the top and it's no longer novel?"

Whatever the case, Dana doesn't see a problem trying it out on some forms, such as insurance policies. "It basically costs you nothing to try it, and I can't imagine a world where this hurts or it will make people lie more," he said.

The research is published today (Aug. 27) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Internet Network Marketing Recruiting: How to Prospect A Total ...

Posted on August 27, 2012

internet-network-marketing-trainingAs online marketers we get comfortable hiding behind a computer, prospecting behind the cloak of Facebook, Twitter and our Blogs. But to become a true recruiting machine online there will be times where you will have to get from behind the curtain, step outside of your comfort zone and actually talk to prospects on the phone that you do not know.

Shocking but true?

As you are building an internet network marketing business (online or offline) you want to have a team that is willing to engage and talk to people instead of pushing links to presentation overviews.

People join opportunities not because of the products or compensations plans but because they truly feel the person they partner with in business can help them achieve their goals.

Here are three of the most important steps to prospecting a total stranger

Step 1 ? Pique there interest. People in the industry get pitched all the time, sometimes to the point where they miss a great opportunity because they are so quick to dismiss it as ?just another person pitching me their business?.

Asking people questions, following up with light chit chat and leading into piquing a prospects interest is an art ? something that most people don?t have the patience or tact to use. So here is an example of how to pique a prospects curiosity and open the door to if they are even open to reviewing a new stream of income:

Script -

?Just throwing this out there, but would you be open to doing something on the side that doesn?t currently interfere with what you are currently doing?

I?m just curious to see if you keep your options open when it comes to making money.?

If they prospect say yes and is open to the idea you can reply with a clarifying question such as this one:

?So just out of curiosity why would you be open to making extra income from home??

This is a great question because #1 you haven?t pitches anything to them and you now know WHY they may be interested in building their own home based business.

Lastly instead of sharing all the great things your opportunity can do for them let your tools and resources do the work. Take a step back and open up the door for the tools to qualify your prospect ? this will do two things ? allow you to talk to more people and it will allow you to determine just how serious someone is about your type of business. Remember not everyone is going to be a good fit for your company ? so before you spend your precious time telling your prospect everything there is to know about how wonderful your company and products are ? let them tell you they are interested first. This step is crucial and will save you a lot of heartache.

The PJ Tatler ? Anonymous Plans to Disrupt Emergency Services at ...

So people have to remember, this isn?t a bunch of unorganized and disorganized kids. This is Lisa Fithian, she?s the one who led the unions and the anarchists to shut down Seattle at the ?99 World Trade Organization protest in Seattle. It?s not something to play around with because when this is all said and done the FBI informants will have stopped bomb plots just as they and I did last time. And when that happens conservatives need to rally around because the left media and the entire left establishment who claims they have nothing to do with these anarchists, they will defend them and dirty the name of anybody who exposes them just as they did to me and just as they did to Andrew. They will defend their darlings and attack the character of anyone who holds them accountable and calls them out. And that?s what?s going to happen this time. We need to stand up as a movement, recognize what the threats are, and we need to defend the people who are keeping us safe and hold accountable and demand accountability for the people who are trying to interfere with our rights to assemble.

The other thing that they?re trying to do is that they have a coms group?and this is breaking news you need to know this?they have a coms group that is trying to shut down the EMS communications structure for the city. That?s really happening. They?re trying to shut down the communications structure for the city for law enforcement and emergency medical personnel.

VOIP Technologies Has Turn Out To Be More And More Popular In ...

Sunday, August 26th, 2012 at 7:46 pm ?

VOIP technologies has turn out to be more and more popular in the communications and networking fields over the last few many years because it is both efficient as well as price effective. VoIP technology, merely mentioned, is the transformation of data signals over the internet via a information community. The newest idea to gain reputation in this communication field is the VOIP Gateway.

VoIP gateway transfers the analog indicators into a data packet over a broadband link. Thus, making calls via this process price considerably less when compared with calls produced through the standard phone cables.

VoIP access may be defined as a network gadget that allows transformation of voice calls as also fax messages between the public switched phone community (PSTN) and an Web Protocol (IP) community in genuine time. Technically talking, the basic functions of VoIP entry consists of voice and fax compression/decompression, packetizing, contact routing, and control signaling.

VoIP entry provides numerous features which includes contact management, contact directing and call translation throughout multiple Internet telephony services. VoIP gateway also enables interface to exterior controllers ? Gatekeepers or Gentle switches, Billing Systems, and Community Conduite Systems.

Changing incoming PSTN/phone lines to VOIP ? The VoIP enables calls to be received and positioned on the normal telephony community. Numerous continue to use conventional phone lines simply because it guarantees a greater call voice quality.

Connect a traditional PBX/Telephone method to the IP network ? The VoIP entry allows calls to be made via VoIP facility. Incoming calls can be positioned utilizing a VOIP services supplier, or routing the calls via the Internet. VOIP gateways are available as external units or as PCI cards. A VoIP gateway will have a connector for the IP community with one or much more ports to link the phone lines to it.

There are two different kinds of VoIP gateways ? Analog models and Digital units.
Analog units, as the title suggests, are used to link regular analog telephone lines to it. Analog models are usually available for up to 24 lines.
Digital models, on the other hand, enable connecting electronic lines both 1 or much more BRI ISDN lines(Europe), one or more PRI/E1 lines(Europe) or 1 or more T1 lines (USA).

This technology is becoming utilized by numerous business homes because of advanced functions like web conferencing, video conferencing etc that enable customers to have face to encounter conferences with their customers distribute across the world. It is consequently not required for them to journey to different places to hold meetings investing a great deal of cash and time.

But an additional advantage is worldwide calls can be inexpensive as they are made with the assist of SIP protocols and SIP cards. VOIP entry method is scalable as the user does not require any phone extensions or lines for the transmission to take location.

Standard telephone lines run the risk of disruption if there are heavy rains, floods, storms and other all-natural disasters. As VOIP gateway is based on satellite transmission, this kind of risks are minimal. VoIP gateway is simple to configure in contrast to the conventional phone system and it is also simple to handle this method as the internet configuration interface is absolutely nothing complex.

The essential requirement for availing this VOIP technologies is a high speed broadband link. It requirements PCI cards for the exterior units along with a connector and a few port lines for creating the link between the pc and the phone.

Matthews: Romney is too deep in bed with GOP to ever be moderate again

Let me finish tonight with the wayward shift of the rightward party.?

I have thought for awhile that if President Obama were to lose this election, it would be because voters believed both candidates?he and Mr. Romney?were both to the left of where they say they are. ?

Obama would successfully be accused of being intent on a far larger government role than he has supported, Romney being able to sell himself as a candidate far more moderate?far more to the left?of the commitments he made in the primaries and since.?

Now, given the events of the last weeks, I think that scenario is unlikely. It's increasingly obvious that Mitt Romney, whatever stance he took as governor in Massachusetts, has married the right wing of his party: the neo-cons, the no-taxers, the religious right, the hardliners against abortions rights. He is not, nor can he be confused, with the guy who pushed health care in Massachusetts, who once called himself stronger on gay rights than Ted Kennedy. That memory is as faded as the old newspapers of that era?if any remain anywhere?except in Romney's scrapbook.?

No, I think the rise of Todd Akin, the picking of Paul Ryan, the emergence of Ryan's hardline position on abortion, the whole menu of it means that Romney has set the table for himself. He's made too many deals with the right that he cannot disentangle himself from.?

He's one of the people now he's gotten in bed with?and that, ladies and gentlemen, is a fact.?

Team building | How can you relate productivity to leadership?

How can you relate building to leadership or team productivity? The same way companies measure any other variable in a process. This streamlining, is analyzed for each individual input and output, along with variables and measurement of the edges of a process. Truthfully, a team or a process is palpable ? we can immediately see the effects. The challenge in teaching the decision makers in companies, to equate the work of their teams, the company of Financials.

Vocational training is for most companies given. When I worked a manufacturing company, it was the company and equipment most frequently used part of setting a new employee about to train in General. Whats with the other areas of training ? such as leadership, knowledge sharing or team-building? Known as human capital management, these areas are painted often pretty quickly from the budget in tight economic times. It may seem that HCM are issues only benefits and easily dispensable for short term budget planning. However, this decision may the company more money in the long term costs. The best way for companies to keep training rotation and Center to prove that HCM training the bottom line effect is likely.

Ram Charan ? author of what the CEO wants you to know: how your company really works focuses on the basics of money ? it says are three questions, each leader must answer are: 1. What is the money that model my organization? 2. How my team to contribute money that model? Think of the impact of these issues. Together with the issues, Charan includes five building blocks of money make model: cash, margin, speed, growth, and customers. By educating everyone in society to certain objectives can work guide on the basics of the financial structure of the company.

Written by Jim Mahone and Chuck Bokor paper under the title review of leadership training: economic impact and return on investment the effects of leadership training is analysed quantitatively by two different courses and in two different industries. One showed their results almost 15 per cent return on investment when you compare the cost of the initial training, the overall effect of the Organization, as well as a projected 179-to-1 rate for the cost-benefit ratio. Why, these conditions are so high, can be explained by the fact that leadership training develops the capacity in individuals with all kinds of situations, said the paper. The benefits, the right decision for individuals in senior positions of leadership make enormous, can have while also significantly impact the cost of the wrong decision.

Leadership training is evaluated not only on team members in the business objectives or appealing workers feel. Executives need to influence business knowledge and acumen of the company, as well as constantly better decision making skills to learn, so they can have confidence handle any situation or the choice that results.

Canada economic growth again seen below forecasts

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's economy likely grew at a disappointing pace for the third straight time in the second quarter, expanding at a slower rate than the Bank of Canada expects and adding the country's unused productive capacity.

In a Reuters survey of analysts on Friday, the median estimate was for annualized growth of 1.6 percent, not enough to absorb the slack in the economy. Such a pace is likely to keep the central bank from raising interest rates anytime soon.

The Bank of Canada reckons that the economy's potential output grows by 2 percent a year. Anything less than that adds to unused capacity and in theory reduces inflationary pressure.

In July the bank said it expected second-quarter growth of 1.8 percent, a downward revision from its previous forecast of 2.5 percent. Canada will miss the lower forecast if the economists are correct.

Only four of 23 economists in the Reuters survey saw growth of at least 1.8 percent. Growth in the previous two quarters was 1.9 percent, and it undershot the Bank of Canada's forecast by as much as 0.6 points in the first quarter.

For June, the economists saw minimal growth of 0.1 percent, repeating May's result after a 0.3 percent figure in April.

Weak net exports took the greatest toll on second-quarter economic growth, with the trade surplus shifting from an C$80 million ($80.6 million) surplus in March to a C$1.81 billion deficit by June, due to lower oil prices as well as higher imports.

Consumer spending, a primary source of strength, also flagged. Retail sales dropped in April and June.

That said, Bank of Montreal senior economist Michael Gregory expects to see solid business capital spending as well as residential investment. The housing market is showing signs of cooling but lots of construction is in the pipeline.

Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney has retained his bias towards increasing interest rates, saying this week that the underlying momentum was roughly in line with the growth in potential.

Treasury prices rise

NEW YORK (AP) ? Treasury prices climbed Thursday after unemployment claims rose and the Federal Reserve hinted at more help for the U.S. economy.

The price of the benchmark 10-year Treasury rose 12.5 cents for every $100 invested. The yield, which moves in the opposite direction from the price, fell to 1.68 percent from 1.70 percent late Wednesday.

The Labor Department said claims for unemployment benefits rose last week by 4,000 to 372,000, the second increase in a row.

The Fed hinted Wednesday at further measures to help the economy, although one Fed regional president appeared to cast doubt on the idea in an interview with CNBC on Thursday.

The 30-year Treasury bond rose 18.8 cents for every $100. Its yield fell to 2.79 percent from 2.81 percent late Tuesday.

The yield on the two-year note slipped to 0.26 percent from 0.27 percent.

The three-month T-bill paid 0.10 percent.

After Penn State scandal, Congress should make NCAA put students, education first

In light of the scandal at Penn State, which reveals how big-time college sports often overwhelm the core values of higher education, Congress should closely examine whether the NCAA is running a not-for-profit enterprise or a?commercial entertainment empire.

By Allen Sack / August 24, 2012

Penn State defensive tackle Jordan Hill stretches during NCAA college football practice in State College, Pa., Aug. 21. Op-ed contributor Allen Sack observes: 'Penn State is obviously not the only university that has compromised core values to defend its interests in revenue-driven sports....College sports has to keep an eye on the bottom line. But profit maximization is not its mission. That message has been lost in recent decades.'

In 2009, the House Energy and Commerce Committee held congressional hearings on the fairness of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) ? the holy grail of college football. At issue was whether it was fair for six major conferences to receive automatic bids to the five most prestigious and financially lucrative bowl games, even if teams from other conferences had better seasons. President Obama even weighed in, saying he favored a playoff over the current system.

Senator Orin Hatch (R) of Utah, a member of the Senate Antitrust Committee, defended government intervention in college sports on the grounds that Congress should not hold colleges and universities to lower standards of fairness and ethical behavior than it would a commercial entity. In other words, when the issue was how to disburse the significant spoils of the college sports industry, Congress did not hesitate to enter the fray.

In November of 2011, a grand jury in central Pennsylvania revealed the worst scandal in college sports history. A report revealed that top leaders at Penn State, including beloved coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier, had covered up sexual abuse of children by former Penn State football defensive coach, Jerry Sandusky, in order to protect the PSU football program. This scandal has implications far beyond Penn State and has shaken the ethical foundation of college sports to its very core.

But so far, there has been no outrage from the White House, no call for a congressional hearing. Yet nothing I can think of would provide greater leverage for getting the NCAA to pass rules that truly put educational and ethical values above its current obsession with building a commercial entertainment empire. Such a congressional hearing is long overdue.

The NCAA and its member institutions are the architects of the ?athletic culture? that by NCAA President Mark Emmert?s own admission has become ?too big to fail, indeed, too big to even challenge.? As recently as 2006, former NCAA president Myles Brand extolled the virtues of commercialism in collegiate sport in his State of the Association Address. What he did not explain was how to keep the profit-hungry monster from devouring education.

In universities that dominate the race for the college athletics pot of gold, celebrity coaches and their entourage of athletic boosters, alumni, and sports-addicted board members have gained considerable influence over university governance issues, especially in the area of athletic policy. College presidents, who are supposed to run the NCAA, are often more concerned with keeping these constituencies happy than defending academic integrity ? or in the case of Penn State, the welfare of children.

Tropical storm Isaac: 9/11 trials delayed as storm targets Guant?namo Bay (+video)

Tropical storm Isaac is forecast to hit Guant?namo Bay Saturday, prompting the judge in charge of the trial of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to put off proceedings.?

The judge presiding over the military commission trial of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four co-defendants has canceled six days of pretrial hearings at Guant?namo in the face of an approaching tropical storm and potential hurricane.

On Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center projected that tropical storm Isaac would pass directly over the US Naval Base at Guant?namo Bay, on the southeast coast of Cuba, by Saturday morning.

Officials on the base ordered the evacuation of roughly 200 people, including lawyers and relatives of 9/11 victims who traveled to Guant?namo to watch the legal proceedings.

Judge James Pohl, a US Army colonel, cancelled the proceedings on Wednesday citing the approaching storm.

The hearings were originally scheduled to begin Wednesday morning, but Judge Pohl postponed that hearing for a day because a train derailment in Maryland had knocked out communications of defense lawyers.

The judge granted the earlier delay at the request of defense lawyers.

Wednesday?s action came in a two paragraph order.?

?Based upon impending weather conditions, the recommendation that all non-permanent party personnel depart the island, and a concern for the safety and welfare of all personnel, the sessions scheduled to begin 23 August are hereby canceled,? Pohl wrote.

?A new docketing order setting the next session in this case will be forthcoming,? he said.

Tropical storm Isaac is also on radar screen of the Republican Party, which is set to hold its national convention in Tampa starting Monday.

Early forecasts have suggested the storm may pass over Tampa. But it remains unclear whether such an early projection will remain valid in five days.
